77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Ok I have not been here in a while cause I was restoring the wife's 70 Nova. Now that is done and I am starting my 77 Bu and I am excited to tear it apart and start the work. The car body and floor is very solid but the inside of both doors are rotted, not the outer skin just the inner bottom. I'll know how bad once I sandblast that rust and get ready to put in patches. but I have lots to do before that. Frame has to come out, motor is gonna be a LS1 and I wanna confirm it will fit prior to the teardown. Dash needs restoring. lots of fun stuff. I'll start with a before pic and I will put some during pics up as I go. Gonna be a 2 year project so here goes...

I had just made the car a bucket and console car but the windows leaking got to me and I took it off the road last year to concentrate on the Nova. But its my turn now.

Looks far more presentable than my car as it is! Leaking windows and years of Northeast salt... eh.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
I think it is medium green metallic. I call it puke green. But I plan to use that same color. Its a Florida car, it came up here in 95ish and I bought it after the second owner could not sell it and had to drive it through a winter. I'll post some more pics since I have been putting in about 2 hours a night on it.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Thanks. It gets me out of the house so yes I enjoy being in the shop with the radio cranked up and just working away. I will keep posting pics and at some point I will need advise on some details cause I wanna go Resto Mod and some questions will arise. I'll be asking your ideas if you do not mind.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Update time. Frame is out. but my pics are slightly short of showing that. Gotta get them off my phone still.
Anyone need a 305 2bbl? I gotta get rid of this and the TH350.

Just testing the LSx fit. It should be fine with the Truck oil pan. I just need a normal intake.

Yeah. I don't know about fun but I am anxious as can be. I did the wife's Nova and it was the same deal. Just a smaller frame. I am taking the frame and all piece in to blasting and possibly powder coating this weekend.

Earlier you said LS1 but I see an iron block. What engine is it?

Does the wife know you used the lobstah pot for antifreeze collection? Be careful, LOL.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Its a truck motor. Not sure what they are technically called. LSx? Its gonna get a better intake, headwork and a nice cam. It will be an LS-phil. Uh the lobster pot was for pasta when I was a kid. I swiped it from Mom 30 ish years ago.

4.8? 5.3? 6.0? Do you know the year? What heads are on it?

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
May be this will help you in your question. Mine in photos below it out of a 2003 chevy Tahoe. Its a 5.3 what they call a drop out or take/lift out. It is a iron block with Aluminum heads. I have no clue what "LS it is" If you are looking to do one you will want every thing with it uncut harness and all. Mine is a drive by wire so you would need the gas pedal also.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Maybe I can help you both.. Â In your case, Wally you just say it's a 5.3. Â "LS1" isn't a generalized term. Â It's the aluminum block 5.7. Â Any time someone says LS and a number, they should mean a specific aluminum blocked engine. Â The truck engines have so many variations through the years that unless you really know what you have you just say displacement. Â I have an LQ4 6.0 in my Chevelle and my buddy has a factory flat top piston LQ9 6.0 going in his 78 Chevy truck. Â The only difference is pistons and compression. Â
If either of you have opened your engines up, generally a 5.3 will have dished pistons and a 4.8 will have flat tops. There are occasions where that's not true buuuut.. You can also pull the oil pan to check the part number on the crank. 4.8s have a shorter stroke crank than the rest of the truck engines. They put both a 4.8 and a 5.3 in half ton trucks so you have to do some investigating to find out what the donor has. The easiest way is to check the VIN but I can't remember which way it goes so I'll have to look that up again.
All LS engines share a majority of parts. Almost all have aluminum heads except the very first 6.0s and they're junk.
Hope this helps everyone.
