Re: vinyl top removal
lagunaman, a good many years before 2002 I removed my vinyl top by trimming around the windshield trim and roof rail with a box cutter. After ripping the vinyl off the top was covered with surface rust. I used a wire wheel on a 4" grinder to remove the rust , I painted the roof with a heave textured paint just to get by ( looked like s##t ). In 2002 I parked the car , gutted the interior and removed all the glass and put it on jack stands. It sat there until 2020 when I finally decided to get it back on the road.
When you had the top replaced did they remove the window trim and roof rail? Are you going to replace the vinyl top or delete it ?

Re: vinyl top removal
When you say your laguna has pencil sized holes in the roof, do you mean in the vinyl cover or the actual metal?

This seems ominous, to me at least. Is the headliner damaged too? I would be concerned about hidden rust. This seems more like a candidate for a frame off than a sort of rolling renovation part by part. My car has only had light rust issues in the trunk and rear quarters from leaks and that is trouble enough. Never had holes. But I think others with more experience than myself should weigh in as to the best course of action.

Re: vinyl top removal
The headliner has rust stains so I removed it and found rust on the metal inside portions of the roof . There is another plate under the outer plate . I wonder about removing that and doing something with the inside coating of the metal

Re: vinyl top removal
Sorry my concerns were right. It would help if you could provide pictures of your roof. I have never had significant roof rust on any car I owned but I also never had a vinyl roof. I am therefore not the best person to ask about what to do. But clearly you do need to examine every surface you can to see the degree of rust damage before proceeding. I hope someone here can provide specific guidance.
