Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
Don't get me wrong. I think these motors are awesome. Here is what I got done last night. She is sitting in her new home. Still need to get it slid back a touch and get the trans x member back in but I shoe horned it in there by myself last night. It fought me all the way but finally it popped in.
done last night.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
Did you get the motor mounts mounted in?
Any problems with clearance with the Dirty Dingo brackets you have?

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
Motor mounts are in and bolted. The oil pan is right up against the cross member but it should slide back 1/2 inch or so which should give me plenty of clearance. Probably wont get back out there till Saturday. I will post up some pics when done.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
So the other night when I put the engine in it seemed like it went in hard. So I started checking it out yesterday. The oil pan was touching the crossmember on the passenger side so out it came. This is what I found.
And on the crossmember
The brake line had to be replaced. The decision was a $200 swap oil pan or notch the crossmember. I figured notching the crossmember would take me a couple hours and a hundred bucks an hour is pretty good pay. So I notched.
Cut a patch from some flat stock I had laying around. Welded and ground the welds.
Painted
Reinstalled the engine and trans. Much better.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
Finally time to update this thread
I got all the egr and air pump stuff off the engine and welded up the manifolds
Started on the down pipes. Need to rotate the drivers side and weld in O2 sensor bungs in both sides. Then weld on adaptors for existing exhaust sytem. I am trying not to cut up the exhaust so we can install headers at some point.
finished product
how the passenger side looks in the car
looking up towards the manifold and repositioned O2 sensor
The new drive shaft is installed
Picked up this ls6 engine cover. Need to figure out how to mount it.
Waiting on the Holley alternator and ac bracket. Going to wrap up the exhaust tonight and start on the fuel system. Have an impalal gas tank and internal pump to install.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
Is the 4L60e Trans just an extra heavy duty 700R4?

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
I think the "e" designation means electronic. I don't think the 700 r4 was electronic.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
the 4l60e trans is a little heavier duty and yes its electronic. also same with the 80le beind stronger yet and elecronic 200r4 and 700r4 non electronic. side note the early 700r4's have a alot of week parts i beleive by 87 they were fixed. how do i know 82 chevy 4x4 killed the tranny and every shop said case was weak from factory and even though had 2nd and 4th and reverse all parts would need replaced beacause as i was told just plane junk. said would be cheaper to go get newer case and rebuild or buy a new one

Correct. The 700-R4 was later re-designated 4L60. When it became electronically controlled it was designated 4L60E.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
This weekends work. Started Saturday wrapping up the exhaust. Broke a stud off in the passenger side manifold so almost an hour wasted removing that. Hung the down pipes and then cut and welded pipes to connect to old exhaust system.
Once the exhaust was done I moved on to the gas tank. The old tank came out without to much effort
and I starting installing the new fuel pump / sending unit into the 95 caprice tank
I then realized that the junk yard did not include the lock ring with the tank. Grrrrrrr. Done for the night. Found one at Rock Auto and ordered the $6 part that is holding up that part of the project. That is the worst part for me. I hate waiting for parts. This morning I went out and lit the woodstove and came back in the house for coffee for an hour. Laid out the new harness and familiarized myself with the basic layout.
Next I found a good spot for the harness to go through the firewall and cut a 2" hole.
The harness was fed through the hole from the inside and the rubber sealing grommit was installed. Then I fed the harness up behind the passenger side head and layed it on the engine
Then I started connecting the harness to the engine.
Finished top of engine
I found this empty connector the 2 pin one on the right. Not sure what its for.
Inside the car I removed the glove box and there is all kind of room above it for the pcm. Should make a nice neat install.
Waiting for parts again now.....

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
That looks like a posi to me. I've never seen that "S" spring or the four clutches on a open rear end. unless I'm missing something, i think you are wrong.

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
I'm not a posi guy, but if that's not a posi, what are the edges of what looks like clutch discs on the right side in the picture ??
I've never had a posi rear end, so I'm still learning ! Part of the carrier bearing mount ?

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
It spins both wheels. If you rotate the yoke both wheels go the same way. Ive seen it. The 73 monte that chris had it in would spin both tires what seemed like forever. Just sayin.

The 2 pin connector to the right of the map sensor is the oil pressure sender.

I stand corrected.
Should of thunk before you blurted. Maybe you could of said "i've never seen a posi that looked like that" but who am i to judge.
When i bought the monte i did not know that a posi was under it. I took the rear cover off because it looked different than others ive had. When i looked inside, it looked different to. So i thought (guessed) maybe it was a posi. So i pulled it and kept it. I already knew what an OPEN rear end looked like. But never saw a posi before. As the saying goes"you learn something everyday".
Before your rant, did you look at the link i posted at the bottom? I tried to help. Have a good day

Re: ls1 swap in my sons 75
ive been holding on to this rear-end for years. if someone told me it was not a posi, than its taking up space and it would have to of been gone a long time ago.
just seemed like you were telling me i did not know what i had. on a side note,i would of loved to sell you an open rearend if you thought it looked like a posi....
