Re: ecu???
that posi unit might be right- depending on whether it's a 2 or 3 series carrier. if you are going with 3.42 gears, you will need a 3 series carrier. but i think there are 3.42 gearsets that use the 2 series carrier now, too.

Re: ecu???
Someone want to verify if that's a gov-loc or not? Looks pretty similar to the one that went boom in my 91 z71. MallyMal, if that turns out to be a gov-loc, you'd be better off burning a $100 bill. I think the bill might even last longer, LMAO.
It might turn out to be an Auburn or some other type of limited slip, though. I'd ask the seller or see if someone on here has experience with earlier model trucks.

Re: ecu???
There are no 2 or 3 series for the 8.5 axle. Its all the same carrier.
- txdrivetrain
thats what the guy said selling the posi for under $100. not true right cause i've seen others that specify what series carrier it is adn still be for 8.5

that's a later model 30 spline differential- you have 28 spline axles, so you'd need to buy different axles to use it.
later Caprice 8.5 axles would work, but the wheel mounting pattern and center hub are bigger on those.
when i had my 71 Nova, i built up an 8.5 rear out of a 74 Nova for it. i got a good deal on a set of used Richmond 3.70 gears and a stock posi out of a late 70's Trans Am. i think i paid $125 for the gears and posi unit, but it was a friend of a friend that had it and it was 9 years ago.

I don't know why I didn't reply to this sooner. Guess I missed it. I have one laying around here somewhere, but you can buy them brand new from Summit for like $25. After buying a used one from me & paying shipping, you would be better off going new for a couple more bucks.

BTW, did you get a chance to read that book yet?
