If I install a slightly used ring and pinion with the pinion bearing already on it in my existing carrier does it require a break-in period?

I would think no, but I would take it easy just to be safe.

Yes and no. If you can set the gears up as they were in the old housing, the gears won't really need a long break in. There will be some run in time as the gears re match themselves to each other. Same goes for the bearings. The used bearing still has to create a pattern to the outer race which is pressed into the housing.

Although not really necessary, I'd like to know what the lash was and reinstall with the same lash numbers.

Isn't the pinion preload torque value different from "in service bearings"(used) and new bearings?

Yes. I would get new bearings anyway because the pinion shim under the bearing will most likely be different. I have a inner pinion bearing that goes on with slight force so I can change pinion shims to get the right thickness without pressing it on and off. Then when I have it set, I press on the good on. Same brand of course.
