I have a lead on a 96 caprice rear. Guys says its a posi, but doesn't know the ratio. Any idea where the id would be, without opening it? This is directly related to the other question I posted.

On caprice rears look for one of the following codes stamped into the axle tubes or on a tag attached to the covers or even better if he has the car there check the rpo tag in the trunk.

GM8 AXLE REAR, 2.56 RATIO
GU1 AXLE REAR, 2.41 RATIO
GU2 AXLE REAR, 2.73 RATIO
GU4 AXLE REAR 3.08 RATIO
GW9 AXLE REAR, 2.93 RATIO
GU5 AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO

Will these swap out without mods to the car? Was thinking of switching to disk brakes in the rear anyway and to posi. This might be little cheaper and both done at the same time would interest me. Cool

From what i have heard the only differences are that the rear lower trailing arm frame mount on the g3's are a little smaller, only drilling out of the bolt hole in the mount is required. Also of course the axles are going to be a 5 on 5 boltpatten.

94-96 caprice and impala ss ratio was only available with 3.08's , posi was an option, but either way by now the posi unit if it has one its worn out by now, they are the auburn cone type units , non rebuildable

Be careful though , some l99 4.3 v8 caprices got the 7.5 rear with 3.42's
