Steering wheel CRAP !

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
That is the plastic actually breaking down and trying to revert back to the crude oil that it was made from. There is nothing you can do about it. I have heard of people trying to sand it down and then buffing it back to a finish near what it was new, but it was a LOT of work and never was worth the effort because you never could sand enough off to get rid of the deteriated top layer of plastic. I just broke down and bought a wheel cover from Pep Boys and streached it until it went on. Looks kind of odd with a green steering wheel and a gray and black cover. JB

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
That stuff is a p.i.t.a. to remove. I'm sure that by the time you've read this, you'll have discovered the dishwasher treatment didn't work. I've cleaned a couple steering wheels that were pretty bad by using Spray N Wash (it's marketed as a degreaser), Soft Scrub and a scrubbing pad like those that are a sponge on one side and a coarse mat'l on the other. You have to scrub like crazy. I've even gone so far as to use an S.O.S. or Brillo pad...but, be aware those will probably dull the finish once the gunk is removed; although an application of conditioner (ArmorAll) will usually restore the looks. Seems I remember on one wheel I used a blade to gently scrape as much of the stuff off as possible before scrubbing it. Suggest you start with the scrubbing pad and Spray N Wash and see if that works. Next try the Soft Scrub. Last resort, the Brillo pad as gently as you can and still get the gunk off. Anyone else have a better idea?

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
The steering wheel in my dad's '70 Chevelle is starting to do that.
But, it doesn't matter, because it NEVER gets driven.

That's a shame (the car not being driven, that is). Too many of us let these classics just sit in the garage and forget to enjoy the thrill of driving them.

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
He really needs to sell it.
It needs a total mechanical overhaul. It does run, but needs a lot of work.
He'll never do it. Sell it to someone who will give it the care it deserves.
I know someone who is DYING to have that car. And he would give it proper care. But he'll never sell it. He's had it since '82. It will just sit and rot.

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
I used Simple Green with a scrub brush, a fair amount of time, and elbow grease to get that sticky goop of mine. Then I used a 3M vinyl/plastic protectant on it. As of now, it seems to have worked. The SG left a white residue in the cracks but the 3M stuff made it vanish.

When I had my '74 Chevelle, I used mineral spirits.
Don't have that problem on the Monte though.

It drives me crazy not driving mine when they are in winter storage. As soon as the salt is gone off the roads, I take my cars out for a nice long ride. It's what a car is engineered to do, to drive.

Kyle.
What I worry about mineral spirits, that it drys out the rubber/plastic and may discolor it too.

I followed up with Armor-All. I only had do do it a couple times, and it never came back.

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
SEM makes a soap for vinyl & plastic parts such as steering wheels, trim, etc... I used it after trying all sorts of household cleaners. The SEM soap draws the dirt out of all the little nooks but it still took me a couple of hours to get it to the point that I felt comfortable painting it. (Was very dirty though and wheel was cleaned off the column).

Re: Steering wheel CRAP !
I took mine off, filled the kitchen sink with some dish soap and some of the hottest water you can stand and soaked it in there. Took about 10 minutes of scrubbing with a soft brush to knock the rest of the really caked on gunk off.
All that black stuff is just dirt and grease from your hands over the years. Mine now looks as good as the day it was made.
