sticky steering wheel
Anyone ever have a sticky steering wheel ?? I had it happen some years ago on a Chevelle, and an El Camino.
I retrieved the steering wheel for the Elco project from my storage room, and it's sticky, just like what I had some years ago. Don't remember ( I have CRS !) what I did to correct it.
Seems like whatever makes it sticky is from the wheel material itself .......

Yeah mine were both gross. I turned my gf loose with one of those Mr. Clean magic erasers and it got it all off/out however you wanna put it.

Re: sticky steering wheel
I'd try to clean it with SEM soap & clear coat it with a good clear coat for plastic.
Mine was covered in crud & I cleaned it with SEM soap then hit it with SEM "XXX" adhesion promoter & Duplicolor black paint for plastic. I just got a sport wheel- if you're interested in my old one let me know. I'll let it go cheap for you.

ive heard its the oils escaping from the vinyl.

Re: sticky steering wheel
That's exactly what's happening. The vinyl is degrading and leaching out oils. I have tried many different cleaners and some wheels are so bad none of them really worked. Then, if you scrub too hard with a cleaning pad, you dull the surface. People tell me it's only a matter of time before they become greasy/sticky again, anyway. Time to consider a wrap or another steering wheel. Personally, I'm not sold on a painted one holding up for any length of time...what with the constant rubbing of your hands while driving.

Re: sticky steering wheel
I thought about the paint too but the adhesion promoter is supposed to help at least maybe prolong the inevitable a bit. I cleaned the pi$$ out of it too, in my case it was more mold & grime than anything leaching out though.

This happens to a lot of vinyl, I see it in some newer vehicles too, on the dashes. Usually some tough cleaner/degreaser, a wash mit, and hot water, and a lot of scrubbing will get it clean! But sometimes the old stuff is very stubborn. I cleaned up the SS Chevelle wheel for my 76 when I got it. I have the original brown wheel for the car that is sticky too, I havent tried to clean it up yet though.

Re: sticky steering wheel
Mine is Firethorn red, but I hate to try paint on it. I have a black one around here also. I'll just fool around with it & try some cures !
Thanks for the offer though 77mali

Re: sticky steering wheel
I have a 4 spoke wheel that I worked hard to remove all the stickyness off of. For two years it was like brand new and now this past summer I just got in it as usual and it started to get sticky again. Not sure about the standard wheels but there are repro sportwheels available. SPENDY! but available. And a good investment in my opinion.

I used to be big into Novas. These are from Novas but I believe all GM 4 spoke sport wheels are the same. The one in my Chevelle now which I spoke about above actually came from a 75' Nova SS 4 speed car that I yanked from it before I sold it.

This is true, I'd rather put that kind of money in a new 70' Chevelle SS wheel before getting a new sport wheel.

Re: sticky steering wheel
Believe it or not I have put mine in the dishwasher with extra detergent and it seems to work good. You have to run it through a couple times but it seems to work.

Re: sticky steering wheel
I dont know if mine is sticky because back in the 80's I bought a leather wrap with needle and heavy thread and covered my wheel. It still looks great. I just bought this one on ebay last week but the leather has perforations on it. Its going on my truck. My chevelle one is smooth and still looks and feels great. The seller has 3 colors to choose from. But its coming from China so it will take a while to get to you. Like harbor freight, shipping sometimes takes a while.

Re: sticky steering wheel
Tonight I used one of those cleaning rags that are available in bundles from places like Walmart, which seem like a rough bath towel. I rubbed on this steering wheel for about ten to fifteen minutes, and got all the sticky feel off of it. Kinda strange I thought, but it worked. May have to do that to it again sometime ??
I'm inclined to keep a stock wheel on this project.
Spending big money on a fancy steering wheel doesn't tempt me much, when I need two stainless steel mufflers and stainless tail pipes yet !

Did you use the rags dry? Or what cleaner did you use?
