Newly Painted Laguna Trunk
FINALLY...after many hours of cleaning, sanding, filling and more sanding of the pitted and pocked trunk pan on the Laguna, I was ready to lay down some paint. Wanted to duplicate the factory look as best I could and researched various brands of trunk spatter paint. Decided on Rustoleum Trunk Spatter as it's solvent based...not water based like the others. (many complained of the water based brands lifting if you got water in the trunk). I then shot this with Matte finish clear to help seal it as well. Obviously, it's not a dead-on match to our factory trunk paint, but I couldn't be happier with the end result. I've got a repro mat and restored bumper jack kit to install and I can then cross this project off my "to do" list.

Looks very nice Steve......... how long did you sand and fill and what did you use for the filler just Bondo or ? or Just built the primer up as you worked ?

Re: Newly Painted Laguna Trunk
Ha...not too eager to get back into that kind of project, again; especially considering all the time it took for just a trunk. Wish I had taken a Before pic. Lots of surface rust and scale from PO presumably leaving the car outside uncovered with no w/strip or trunk lock...and, lots of junk inside that held water/moisture. Glad I tackled it, though.
The rusty surface had that "moon crater" look and most were too deep to fill with primer. I bought large tubes of JB Weld and used it like a body filler. P.I.T.A. with all the contours and those recessed channels. JB Weld, however, is not the easiest thing to sand because it dries so hard...but, it provides a solid base.

Re: Newly Painted Laguna Trunk
Ive used the trunk splatter paint from the parts store, i think its duplicolor. any time it gets wet it lets go and turns into a giant mess. I want to know more about the rustoleum splatter you used and how it holds up to moisture

Re: Newly Painted Laguna Trunk
Yeah, kind of confirms what I had read regarding the water-based spatter paints...of which Duplicolor is one that is sold by the auto parts stores around me. In fact, I had to order the Rustoleum online as I couldn't find it anywhere locally; not O'Reilly Auto, Pep Boys, Autozone, Advanced Auto, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Target, Walmart nor Ace Hardware. As I said, for added protection, I've put a couple coats of matte finish clear over it; which, I've read, will help protect the water-based stuff, also. I'll be sure to let everyone know should problems develop.

Re: Newly Painted Laguna Trunk
I used Eastwood's paint on my 67s trunk, no problems with it over the last 15 years. Not cheap but worked well for me http://www.eastwood.com/paints/trunk-spatter-paints.html
