Pure stock drags
I just received my latest Hemmings Muscle Machines in the mail and started reading another great article on pure stock racing. This got me thinking; I would love to build a car to do this but then I red the rules and my car would need a lot of undoing.
Do you guys think any of the G3 cars could be competitive in this type of racing? I was thinkingaybe a 454 / 400 combo on a base model. Basically these cars are very close to stock so if the highest performance version available was not very fast, then you are not going to do well.

These cars weren't really built with drag racing in mind. More for stock car racing if anything. They weigh a ton. lol But doesn't mean it can't be done.

Oh yeah....and if you mean having a stock 454 as it came in the chevelles in the few early years of the 70's, then my opinion is @*#% NO. lol Unless you think a 2 ton brick with a 245 horse smog infested 454 can be competitive. lol Maybe if they only put you in a 73-77 class.

There was a guy running a 73 stage 1 gs in it a while ago. There are lots of rules that can be bent in these classes. The motor only has to look and appear stock not be stock inside. Yeah the smogged 245 hp 454 can run in it as long as it retains stock appearance and air pump and qjet. Ive seen some of the stuff they do. Very interesting. Google it you will be impressed.

Maybe if they factor it to a weight to hp rating like NHRA stock eliminator. But to run straight up, a 73 454 is not going to be a power house.

No way. But check out either FAST or that pure stock drag website and see the cool stuff they do. I saw a 70 road runner with a 440 go 10.50s on 14 inch bias plys.

So they should just call this class - the MOPAR class. Don't get me wrong, my first car was a 69 340 dart with a 4 spd. But 90% are mopars.
I just thought maybe a 74 with a massaged 454 .060 over with a 2200 stall and a 400 trans and some 4.56 gears might do something. This is all within the rules. But th damn I beam bumpers and 1000 lb doors would kill it. .....

There is a few quick pontiacs in it too. There are more different kinds of cars that is what was there that day.

I have followed them for a little and it seem like mostly factory racers. Mustangs, roadrunners, corvettes....

I think a '73-'77 would do great in the F.A.S.T category.
Sure, there are some high horsepower combinations running. But what is the limiting factor in those cases? The miniscule bias ply tires that came on those models.
My Chevelle came with HR70-15 Goodyear radials on a 15x8 Corvette rally. That tire, coupled with the immense rear overhang that we have, would be a tremendous advantage off the line, in my opinion.

I agree; nonetheless I think they adapt pretty well, since most of the generic stuff will interchange with '70-'72 Chevelle or G3 Corvettes.

So what do you guys think would be the best setup for a drivetrain? I have to assume a big block. I think the limit is 560 cu in. But it would probably have to be a 454 .060 over.

Why would it have to be? Use an after market block at 4.56" bore and a 4.25" stroke crank. There is your 555. Or if you choose, you can use a 4.5" bore block and 4.375 " crank. That gives you a 557. Gives you a cushion for displacement testing. I would assume in 73 they used a 781 or 049 head? So you use a thouroughly massaged set of open chamber heads with the biggest valve in them that wont put the seat into the water port and go from there.

I don't think you can use an aftermarket block or massage the heads.... Maybe I am reading the rules wrong.

Looks like you can shave the heads a little. Im sure there is other stuff. I saw one of those guys soaking his tires in VHT once. I guess to get it to soak in good.

It would be cool if there was a class just for the 73-77 a bodies.
How well do you think a 73 SS 454 Chevelle would fair against a 73 GS 455 Century, 73 GTO with a 455 and a 73 442 with a 455. ALL with automatics, the same gear ratio with a posi and the same size tires. All completely stock and unmolested and all weighing in within 10 pounds of each other including the driver. Start with the heaviest and weight could be added to each car as needed. This way all things are fair and equal relying solely on the car and drivers skill. Now what if the odds were a little different and the Buick was a Stage 1 and the Olds was a V code Hurst/Olds ?

I'd have to go with the Chevy.
The porcupine cylinder head arrangement is far superior than the heads on any of those "BOP" variants.
I spend a lot of time on a Pontiac enthusiast board and watch those guys try to make power with stock block/stock cylinder head Pontiacs. I am embarrassed at how comparatively easy it is (both from a technical standpoint and from a $$ standpoint) to make big(ger) power with a basic Chevy big block than what they can accomplish.

This may be true but remember, we are talking bone stock off the assembly line here for this fictional shoot out.
It would have been better if they were all 4 speeds but you could'nt get a 4 speed with a 455 in a GTO so it had to be an automatic.

Those 455's had around 500lbs of torque come in at 2,500 rpm...that would get a heavy car outta the hole quick! It would be a fun ride for sure!
