stainless steel pipes Empty stainless steel pipes

Post by pila Sun Nov 02, 2014 11:31 pm

People who live it the salt/cancer areas of the country ( like me ) are always interested in stainless exhaust parts. The article about bolt-ons on a 305 had part numbers for stainless headers ( 2451-HKR ) which is Hooker, and the stainless dual system ( SUM-690131-SS )

Bad part for me is that last year when I needed stainless duals, they were not available, and I had to buy a bunch of stainless straight pipes & bends, and tig weld the stuff together.

Anyway, the G3 people here may know which G3s this stuff will fit, and it has to be better than questionable ceramic coated stuff.

Alot of stainless.kits out there. Especially since the 68-72 kits.fit as well. My issue.with all the kits.is.that the mufflers hang lower than stock. Our A bodies have that nice indent inthe floor.board to tuck them up nice. As for stainless headers, those hookers are expensive. Ebay has some chinese ones that look decent but we knkw how that goes.

This is how my thrush 2 1/4" 73-77 exhaust fit on my chevelle before I removed and sold it.  Mufflers were offset in with stock center out.  They hung from the stock frame mounting points.  Nicely tucked up there.  Thats what I'd like to have when I put her back together.  Hate seeing the mufflers from the rear.

For my tail pipes, I used a pair of '72 2.1/2- inch stainless pipes. They didn't fit right, so I cut them to rotate the hump over the axle a bit. I'm not really satisfied with them though.....
Maybe I'll get the correct tail pipes later and replace that section.
Rear is a Currie 9 inch FORD, which adds to the fit problem.

I've been happy with this one from Magnaflow, and the mufflers tuck up where they're supposed to be:

I am thinking that if I ever change mine I will go with the Magnaflow. It seems like they just sound better than the Flowmasters.

Would it be possible to post a ground level pic from the rear so we could get a visual as to how the mufflers hang? Thanks

My mufflers are Borla, the "quiet" ones. At least quieter than their high perf mufflers. !

Okay, here's one (sorry for the delay, had to move all the boxes piled around the car, since we're moving Smile).  The trick is to find the sweet spot where it's high enough to look good, but low enough so the driveshaft doesn't contact the x-pipe as it moves up and down with suspension travel.

I used band claps for the whole system, except for the tail pipe hangers at the rear.  My transmission is still leaking someplace, so removing the exhaust will be easier than with the U clamps, to remove the transmission.  I believe the big O-ring on the pump is what's leaking, so the fun continues......

Ditto on the band clamps, and a generous helping of the copper high-temp RTV to boot, but I did it to eliminate the stupid leaks you always get with U-clamps.  Nothing ruins the sound of a great exhaust note quicker than leaky pipes.

Thats exactly what I'm looking for. Couple questions on that exhaust.

Do you recall the part number for the exhaust?
Are the pipes straight or is there an X or H ?
Are the mufflers offset in and center out ?
Are you using a stock type hanger at the rear of the muffler (or did you have to drill)?

Thanks in advance. If you have any other pics of the exhaust, please post up.
thanks

its 2 1/2 from headers to bumper. no X pipe. original muffs were in-offset out-center. the tails are accually listed for a 72 monte, but fit awesome, but you need a offset offset muff.. the first t-pipes they sent were straight from axel to bumper,i did not like that. so he got on the horn and talked to a pypes rep.the fit in unbelievable..

Awesome pics. Those muffs are tucked just the way I want them. Stock location. Any recall on the kit part number?? Or did you just order for a 72 monte?

I might have numbers on my slip. but we are in the middle of a remodel and im not sure where it is.  he said they were for a 72 monte.
I told him from the get-go they had to look like this.....

and not hang under 1/4 panel and go straight out under bumper

Did the stock muff hangers need any mods? Since the.flowmasters are offset out and stock muffs are center out. Your muffs are nicely centered.
