1973 El Camino
I've been playing with the idea of getting a '73 Elky or maybe a Chevelle. Was wondering what you guys think of these two:

Re: 1973 El Camino
Both look real nice. I like the black one better. Also, on the silver one. Take a look at the 5th pic of the drivers door jamb. Looks like rust under the weatherstrip and edge of the back trim. I'd check that out because there might be more.

Re: 1973 El Camino
The black one looks good ! I know that one can't be restored or have a lot of work done on it, for that asking price.
My first Elco was a '73.....then a '76 SS, then a new '77 etc.....I love G3 Elcos !! Latest is the '75 project, with way too much money spent on it.....

Does anyone know about this eBay listing? I know I've seen the pic with the little boy.

They are a member here. I remember a introduction, and few posts, but not a name.

I don't know...but, that car is stunning in triple black and with the sunroof! Gimmee...gimmee...gimmeeeee....
Question for you paint pros...why would the paint crack like that on the back qtrs? My original paint is showing some very "fine" spiderwebbing on the hood and I'm guessing it's from the engine heat?

Re: 1973 El Camino
That's common for the paint to crack and check like that...especially on the hood of your car, engine heat and the paint being so old it just breaks down. If it does it on the hood it's likely it'll do it everywhere else eventually. It'll need to be stripped to bare metal if you ever want to reprint the car. Can't go ontop of checked paint.

Re: 1973 El Camino
I kinda agree about painting over old paint. I stripped my Malibu down to the bare metal with stripper, and it had been repainted over the old paint once before. It's not a fun job, but I'm used to stripping airplanes.
My Elco was easier to strip, being just the original paint on it.

Laquar paint
Original factory paint was laquar (spelling?) paint and the older it gets the more brittle it becomes. When modern paint goes over the top of laquar, it creates stress cracks in the original paint. JB

Re: 1973 El Camino
For what it's worth, I have several hundred gallons of single-stage auto paint I bought up a coulle of years ago for my wife who used it to make paintings with, but now has switched to other paints. It's made by Sikkens (Akzo Nobel, I believe parent co to PPG?) and it's their 'Autoflex' product. It's no longer allowed to be manufactured because it is the 'old style' (perhaps oil based, not sure) car paint. So this may work better on top of older paints. I have all kinds of colors, if anyone's interested send me a PM and I will see what colors we have. It's in one liter cans (one quart per can I suppose).
