Need help with mis-matched throttle cable linkage. Empty Need help with mis-matched throttle cable linkage.

Four years ago Mr. Backyard Mechanic replaced my two-barrel with a Quadrajet (I have since learned my lesson about using Mr. Backyard Mechanic).  In doing so the throttle cable linkage was replaced, but as you can see from the photo it's really not rigged up correctly.  I had to zip-tie the cable to the linkage because the dang cable would jump out and cause the throttle to stick open.  I'm thinking there must be a linkage that fits better than the one I've got now; what can I do here?

Do I need to just replace the linkage, or does the cable need to be replaced with one appropriate for a Q-jet?

I believe what you are looking for is something like this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mrg-6038?seid=srese1&gclid=CLjX-u636L8CFWoR7AodHSsASA

There are many versions on the market. Some are adjustable, some have provisions for detent cables too.
Your local parts store may have them is stock. Check with Pep Girls first, as they have recently expanded their performance parts section.

You also should use a double return spring. They are one inside the other. Real cheap to purchase. Each spring has a different pull rate which makes for smooth operation.

yup, got that fixed last week! It's hard to see in the photo but there is indeed a dual spring there.

I've seen those at AutoZone and NAPA, but I can't tell how to connect it. The current bracket is connected to the manifold on a horizontal plane, while (what I'm assuming is) the mounting hole on the Summit part is on a vertical plane.  Does that part completely replace my existing bracket or somehow connect to it?

Or does it bolt on to the base of the carb?

And I've seen mention of "trans kick down", which I don't understand completely...I've got a TH350 in the car and when I floor the gas pedal, it certainly kicks down a gear, but is there more to it than that?

Using the picture in the link I posted, you would be looking at it from the distributor. The big hole (far right in pic) goes on the left rear carb stud. When tightened down, that is all you need. the small hole (lower left in pic) in the verticle tab is to connect another return spring iirc.

aha! Now it makes sense!

The throttle return spring brackets I've seen http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1339/overview/ would bolt into the hole that's being used to hold down the current bracket?

And I'm guessing a return spring bracket would be needed if I wanted to maintain the distance I currently have between the throttle linkage on the carb and the connection point on the bracket?

The TH350 does have a cable that could be connected to the throttle linkage, but it is not totally necessary. Instead, it uses vacuum for the kick-down / load signal.
If you have a detent cable and it's not connected, don't worry about it. Most people just leave it disconnected and tuck the loose end under the ac/ heater box.

OK, great! I see in this old photo (prior to Mr. Backyard Mechanic) that the old 2-barrel had a second cable connected to it...don't know what's become of it.

The loose end is in there somewhere. If it had been removed, you would be leaking transmission fluid badly. You could trace the other end as it connects to the top side of the transmission pan area on the passanger side just behind the bellhousing area, but in front of the cooling lines.

This random thread i Just found has a good pic of it:

Hay I think you're looking for the same information Bret Mullikin was looking for in Car and Intake Questions.

http://www.g3gm.com/t8385-car-and-intake-questions

I posted a bunch of pics, including the TWO brackets that I needed when I converted from a 2 to a 4 BBL Q-Jet, one for the accelerator and the other for the trans kick down cable. The last two pics in my post are the ones you want to see.

That looks a lot like mine but has both the throttle and trans kick down.  That means I must have a throttle bracket for a manual transmission car and the wrong kick down bracket, (from what???) but why would there be a separate kick down bracket then? or is there more than one setup that works?

Edelrock makes two types of these brackets for standard cross over & vortec style intake manifolds.  Some come with somewhat adjustable positioning for the pedal, trans & cruise control cables.

(select your trans type on the page to narrow results)

Need help with mis-matched throttle cable linkage. Empty throttle cable bracket problem solved!

Post by dhw3971 Wed Dec 03, 2014 5:30 pm

With help from another member I now have the correct 4-barrel throttle and cruise cable bracket holder! Haven't gotten it all connected yet but next summer I'll be cruising in style again. I've located my cruise cable and I have a cruise control vacuum servo to so I'm in bidness!

My 75 Laguna has two cables connected to the gas pedal. One is the throttle cable, and I just replaced it with a NOS one. The other would be a kickdown cable I guess. It goes from the pedal to the trans. Where do I get that one? The ones I have found go to the side of the carb not the gas pedal.
