accerator cable Empty accerator cable

Post by Bret Mullikin Wed May 28, 2014 2:54 pm

I have been talking about this in the intake topic, but I thought I should put it out on its own. Does anyone know where to get, the brand, or the part number of the correct accelerator cable for a 74 Malibu with a 400 and quadrajet? I can't find the info anywhere.
Thanks

If you know how long it needs to be, from the firewall plastic grommet part, to the end on the housing, it may help to find one. I have one, but not sure which carb it's for, like 4bbl or 2 bbl ......

I retained one from a 2bbl carb, and just made a lengthened plate that bolted to the slot and then to the linkage on my Holley carb. As long as it's wide open when you floor it, the carb doesn't care which one you use.

Thanks,
Pila. I don't know what length it should be. That's why I'm trying to find the part number for an original. The one I bought might work, but there is a huge loop in it due to excessive length.

I bought my '74 Malibu in 1990, and removed the 2bbl for a 4bbl. I had the local dealer check all the Chevy dealers for a 4bbl cable, and the parts guy found one out of state some place. It was the only one in the system at that time, so I guess I got lucky for once.

So, one the cables I have is a 2bbl type... I'll measure them & see if they are different or the same.....

I've changed over from a 2bbl to a 4bbl also, and had the same issues.

First thing to know is what bracket(s) do you have?

The 2bbl had one bracket for both the throttle cable and the trans kickdown, was no where near right for the 4bbl. There are 2 different setups for the Qjet (that's what I remember, as I had the wrong one furst time out)

Thanks everyone. I cut about 3 inches off of the Napa '75 cable and Ace had the exact same cable stops that were put on by the factory. The only difference was that the factory put them on in a much nicer way with its 100 ton press than I did with my wire strippers. I also had to file down the plug that fit in the firewall. Thanks again for everyone's help.

I found a few accelerator cables tonight that should fit our cars

CB15430V (NOS) or CB15431V (Repro) @ thepartsplace

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/atp-y277

also (search as a 74 malibu): http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,1974,malibu,5.7l+350cid+v8,1054482,interior,accelerator+cable,5892

I know little about interchangeability of these cables among the various years/motors.  I do have a couple original spares off '75/'76 350 engines (one each from a 2bbl & 4bbl) and they measure just shy of 21" lg.  According to GM, these would be part #1248077.  Seems there may be a difference in some years in the manner in which the cable attaches to the carb and/or attaches to the retaining bracket on the intake.  Here are the GM part numbers:

#336961 ('73 8 cyl)
#1244125 ('74 2BC)
#1244126 ('74 4BC, 350-400)
#1244127 ('74, 454)
#1248077 ('75-'77, 350/400 & '76-'77, 305)
#1248078 ('75, 454)

The Parts Place #CB15430V shows it's GM #1248077. Summit's cable numbers show theirs to be 2-3.5" longer than what I measure on mine.

I discovered that this morning, as well, when I measured my cable. The rockauto/summit cables are too long. My current cable is pretty beat up and the mounting tabs are broken. I'll likely buy the repro cable from TPPI, hoping that it's a repro of #1248077, i.e. the same length.

Just make sure of the end that attaches to the carb is the same as yours. I found an old e-Bay listing for pt# 1244126 ('74 4BC, 350-400) and it looked like it had the kind of end that snapped over a ball stud as compared to mine (1248077) that has an eyelet. Not sure if this really matters, but wanted to mention it.

I ran into the same headache a few years back. It started when I swapped in a overdrive trans. Ended up making my own cable bracket by cutting & welding 2 small block brackets together to fit the big block. None of the aftermarket brackets were  any good. They would flex with full pull on the TV cable. The accelerator cable is a junkyard piece from a mid 80's full size olds, had to trim down some plastic where it goes through the firewall. perfect fit otherwise. Couldn't find a G3 accel cable with a long enough pull to go WOT.

I now have TWO broken accelerator cables. One that came with my car and one that was sourced from a salvage yard. The plastic mounting tabs just don't hold up to age, I guess. So, I'm going to buy a brand new one. As has been mentioned, the cables that are said to fit our cars are are too long (3-4 inches too long). I did find that the 74-85 Camaro cable is around the same length (21.380 in) as our stock accelerator cable.

Short of putting one side-by-side with a G3 A-body cable to compare differences, I currently don't see any reason why a Camaro cable won't work. I'm going to bite the bullet and order one to see if it will work. I'll let you all know what I find.

I used this bracket and cable and they both work great. Its a universal kit so you will need to adjust the cable to make it the correct length.

Its not OEM but it works.
