Impala SS gas tank
I was reading a pro touring build of a '77 Malibu on chevy talk, and the builder claimed a '96 impala SS tank was a direct bolt in. He claims it is plastic 25 gallon, set up for fuel injection, and even the straps (from the impala) fit. I figured I would post this here since I don't recall this ever being mentioned. Btw I'm just repeating what I read, I have no first hand experience with this swap.

Crap. Wish I'd have known that 7 years ago -- I could have saved the $$$ I spent on a custom tank.

Re: Impala SS gas tank
but a 73 neck is different than a 74-77. so i guess the 96 tank would of fit with the 73 modification...

And yes you would have to change to Accomadate for the 73 difference but it is a direct bolt in to our cars, as is the rears LOL Hint Hint

Re: Impala SS gas tank
Do you think it is just the SS or will any tank from a 94-96 impala fit? How about the Caprice from those years?

Re: Impala SS gas tank
The Caprice, Impala SS, and Buick Roadmaster were the same car, so if it works from one, it should work from the rest.

Re: Impala SS gas tank
It works I have the tank, straps and fuel neck in the 74 project I'm working on. Make sure you get the heat shields that go around the tank as that plastic is close to exhaust. The tank is big but it fits. I don't any more photos of the tank its self but I can take some if you want me to.The tank has baffles in it and the electric fuel pump. The rear end it out of the Impala also the front upper and lower control arms spindles all swap also. Now I have 5 on5 bolt pattern for all 4 wheels.

Good point. Now I don't feel so bad.

Do you need to swap the control arms to use the spindles?

Re: Impala SS gas tank
I don't know they were installed when I bought the car. I have read some where that its all inner changeable between 73-77 and the 96 area impalas . But don't quote me.

That one I can answer definitively, since I upgraded mine to ABS from a Caprice. The Caprice spindles will work fine with the stock A-body control arms and tie-rod ends. You should even be able to re-use your D52 calipers. However, the wheels will be physically 1/4" inboard from their previous location, so plan for that and probably an alignment.

Re: Impala SS gas tank
You guys that installed the tank, what did you use for fittings and lines? I still plan on running a carb and a fuel regulator, I'm just wondering how the lines from the fuel pump hook up to factory lines.

Re: Impala SS gas tank
At my shop we have a kit made by s.u.r.&r. It has all sorts of unions and fittings to make your own. I have plastic line on my car with quick release fittings at the pump & carb.(it can be removed with no tools ) . I also have a modern inline fuel filter (metal) over the rear end with quick release fittings.

Re: Impala SS gas tank
Any chance you remember what fittings you used...? haha It would just help out exponentially so I don't have to buy some, return some, etc.

I could try to look at part numbers tomorrow. Your best bet would be to have to have the sending unit in front of you.
