Didn't you have a l88 hood? I thought I saw pics of your car with one. Anyway I always wanted a fiberglass l88 hood, but wife + kids + mortgage = steel hood.

I'll try to post some close ups of it. Only problem is that I have the nose of the car hanging from the ceiling right now. But I'll get some.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
I want to learn how to make parts with fiberglass. I have alot of good ideas that always end up needing someone else to make something for me. I just want to try myself soon.

Making stuff is pretty easy. Mock up what you want to make. Then get some fiberglass release agent and coat the piece. Then start laying fiberglass mesh on it and roll it smooth. I like to put down some large fiber mat first then a layer of the finer mesh stuff.
Pretty easy but you have to work quickly because it sets up fast.
As for putting on a "scoop". I havent had one crack on me. I would lay the scoop on and pencil the shape on the hood. Then put a 1/8" layer of "gorilla hair" down and set the scoop in it and rivet in place. Then do your body work.
Nowadays I wouldnt bother glassing it in. I'd get some auto body urethane adhesive and glue it on. They put body parts on with that stuff. It expands and contracts with the body.
Just an idea.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
Here's some pics. If you need a close up of any part, let me know. Little tough getting too it right now with my hunting stuff all over the place. Forgive the dust and the cardboard laying on it. I was afraid of hoisting it too high. Just FYI, I bought the hood in 1986 from a company called Fibermotive in think it was Florida. I installed it in '89 when I painted her. The company is no longer in business. I bought the hood springs from them as well. Its 11 coats of Bright Blue Metallic (79 Z28 color) LACQUER. I'm probably going to reshoot it after I change the frame. I'll be shooting urethane in the same color and putting the factory stripes back on that I never got around to in '89.
She's hanging,
Underneath,
Hinge area, (low tension hood springs for glass hoods),
Hood at eye level,
L88 rise at windshield,
Couple of other shots I found

Thanks. Put lots of time into that car years ago. Now she's apart again. I recommend the L88 for a chevelle. For a monte, I think a cowl hood looks the best. Just my opinion, I think the cowl goes better with the montes lines. I like the 3" the best for the monte. Nothing crazy.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
Usually you reuse the OE hinges with low tension springs.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
To add to that, you MUST replace the hinge springs. The factory springs are made to hold up a 70 pound hood. The new fiberglass one will weigh in at around 10-14. That's what mine weighs atleast.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
Nice hood Joe73! Yours is the third one I have ever seen. Whenever other G3 people see mine they are always asking where I got it. I scored it years ago from JC Whitney of all places, but it arrived in a Harwood box!

Agreed! VFN Fiberglass sells the low tension springs also. http://www.vfnfiberglass.com/7377malibulaguna.htmBrainstain wrote:To add to that, you MUST replace the hinge springs. Huh I thought the vfn's went all the way to the front of the hood like my 4" does.

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
+1 on the low tension springs. The bodyman that installed mine used some springs from some Olds or Buick that came with an aliminium hood. Worked like a charm. Ill see if I can findout where they came from

Re: fiberglass hood any thoughts
You can also go to your neighborhood hardware store and get low tension springs for a screen door.
