starter issues
so i need to fix this small problem, my starter is getting ate up, my first one just did it out the blue, my second new one ran good for a few days then ate it up enough to just make a grinding noise, flywheel is good and putting a starter with headers suck so i do not wanna do it 3-4 times if possible

Re: starter issues
Did you make sure it was lined up properly? If it was rebuilt It may need shimmed. What I do is install the starter and with the header out of the way, disconnect the power to the dizzy so the engine can be cranked with out starting. Crank the engine and listen to how it sounds to help determine if it needs shimmed or not. I am very familiar with the pita that headers cause on a SBC.

Re: starter issues
FWIW, when I got my new mini starter, it said to check the clearance between the teeth on the starter gear and the flexplate:
1. Remove the torque converter cover
2. Use a screwdriver to pry the starter gear rearward enough to engage the teeth on the flexplate
3. Make sure the end of a paper clip would fit in between the gear teeth
Anything less than this requires shimming the starter to increase the clearance. If there is insufficient clearance, the starter gear could just grind against the flexplate, or the starter could suffer premature bearing wear. Obviously, make sure battery is disconnected before doing any of this.

Re: starter issues
Are you using the specific bolts for the starter? Sounds stupid, but the starter bolts are shouldered to keep the starter from moving around, and, are they the proper length? I suggest this because sometimes the easy fixes are very often overlooked. What brand is the starter?

Re: starter issues
I'm think you might be referring to tooth count?! There is 153 and 168 tooth flexplates that will bolt onto SBC and BBC engines. I think the only real deciding factor is what type of starter you have. Some factory and aftermarket starters will not work on both and are some designed specifically for a certain tooth count. I have noticed that the staggered bolt pattern starters tend to use the 168 tooth flexplates. You should find out what size (tooth count) starter you have. Are you using a straight across bolt pattern on your starter, or what year is your block.. I can't believe I didn't catch this earlier!!!! After reading your post above, I assuming your after a 153 tooth flexplate. They seem to be the common size for the ministarters.

Re: starter issues
I have both a 168 Tooth & 153. The larger is a bit over 12" in diameter & the other is a bit over 10". They'll both work on a SBC but you have to get the right starter. I've noticed that the smaller wheel is for the straight across bolt pattern on many aftermarket starters & the 168 would be for the offset bolt pattern. They key to your problem is correct alignment engaging the pinion tooth gear on the starter to the gear mesh (ring gear on the flex plate/flywheel). If you had a pic of the starter that might help but you should have got instructions with it...if not look at this....Bigred posted this for me as I had some issues too...LOL
