Plastic. Not very flexible but not brittle.

Re: Window louvers
Got these a while back & did a tiny repair w/ some JB Weld fast cure.
They're mostly really thick & hard plastic....
Keep in mind if your car didn't come with them they'll require a hole drilled through the roof in order to install them like the factory did. Also the interior sail panels are different and the louvers are supposed to be secured through them on the interior side. I'm dreading cutting my car, it doesn't look super difficult but you really have to be "dead on" with the holes. Limey posted measurements, template info & a little "how to" in the tech section. I forget where in the section though, sorry.

Re: Window louvers
Ever think about cutting off the bolts and using 3M emblem/molding tape to fasten them to the car like the side vents do on new cars. Just a thought here.

Re: Window louvers
Actually yes...do you think they'd stay on @ high speeds or have any issues on really hot days with drooling or sagging? Never used that 3M tape before but I've heard that some of these tapes can fail in extreme heat.Wallyuph wrote:Ever think about cutting off the bolts and using 3M emblem/molding tape to fasten them to the car like the side vents do on new cars. I know that they'll recess a bit into the Qtr windows in the back, so that will help, the problem seems to me up front where the thicker portion of the louvers will rest on the body with contact adhesion being the only form of securing them.

Yeah...didn't I give you these photos, before?
If the backside of the leading edge of the louvers was flat, you would probably have enough surface area to get a good bond using the 3M adhesive. As it is, I'm not so sure.

Re: Window louvers
The three cars I've pulled louvers from have had no difference in sail panels versus non louvered cars. Definitely not screwed in through the sail panels.

Re: Window louvers
I was told they screw in that way, so what holds them on the interior body side? Some bracket or what?

Re: Window louvers
Nope just those louver pics I posted for Pila's reference (he's busy looking for his hood bolt...LOL)Mcarlo77 wrote:Hey is that the car you swiped my lovers from?

Re: Window louvers
The screws that thread in to the plastic posts have a washer head on them that contacts the inner pillar.77mali wrote:I was told they screw in that way, so what holds them on the interior body side? Some bracket or what?

Re: Window louvers
My Malibu had the chromed plastic trim around the little windows, and when I bought the car in 1990, I replaced those trim pieces.....except the little stainless corners. The plastic trim was still available back then.
It only took about five years, for the plastic to get crappy looking, just like it was when I replaced it.
So now, it has no trim around those windows, and I gave the corners to someone on a forum, maybe here (?)
I thought about making some trim from stainless steel etc, or maybe even making a pair of slotted covers, similar to the louver type covers.
All kinds of ideas, but no time for all the projects....

pic is kinda dark, but.....

Re: Window louvers
I like to show you why i like to get the window louvers.
I love Original Cars. My chevelle is all Original, original engine, original color, original interior ...
But she looks really classical with the vinyl roof and the small opera windows and not so sportive:
I play i little bit with photoshop and create this Image:
Only things i need to do:
A second Grille to paint it outside the same brown like the car and inside black, Window Louvers in the same color like the vinyl rood, and a front panel without the emblem hole.
What you thinks about this idea?

Re: Window louvers
Ah...that makes a lot more sense, thanks. I musta heard through when I should have heard "behind" the sails.Brainstain wrote:The screws that thread in to the plastic posts have a washer head on them that contacts the inner pillar.77mali wrote:I was told they screw in that way, so what holds them on the interior body side? Re: Window louvers
Looks good either way to me. The louvers & grille treatment you created does look a bit more "Sporty".v8power wrote:I like to show you why i like to get the window louvers.

Re: Window louvers
The changes looks good, but to get a sportier feel, the vinyl roof has to go. A vinyl roof says "luxury" more than it says "sporty". Same as the hood ornament. Just my .02

Re: Window louvers
I have a painted '74 grille difference is I painted the entire front semi gloss black and the frame aluminum silver. I have never really liked the the "Mercedes" look of the '74 grille. Not wanting to destroy my "ok" original I used a junkyard grille instead. I'm currently trying to score a '76 Malibu classic grille (similar look less weight). IMHO it looks 10 times better than " the wall of chrome" original.

Re: Window louvers
Do you have the stainless for the surround if you got a 76 grille? IF I can find all of it I should have two sets and I have a 76 grille on my 76 but I want to change it out.

Re: Window louvers
The surround molding is anodized aluminum on mine, which is a '77 grille.
I will be looking for a better one as time goes by...

Re: Window louvers
I don't currently have any pieces of the '76 grille. I am waiting on another member to contact me with shipping quote, and find it (apparently he misplaced it lol). Depending how it works, I may be willing to part with the one pictured.Brainstain wrote:Do you have the stainless for the surround if you got a 76 grille?
