350 Rebuild
I saw this article on rebuilding a 350 for around a grand that put up good numbers, but I don't know much about parts and wonder if the parts used are any good. for example, I have heard mixed reviews about procomp heads. Do y'all think this motor would last long?

Re: 350 Rebuild
I've read lots of negative stuff about pro comp heads but not from anyone who's actually owned them. I just sold my LT1 chevy heads to a guy who has 2 street rods both with pro comp heads on them. Both cars have over 20k of miles on them with no problems. He had nothing bad to say about them. And he has the older pro comps, not the improved ones that came out recently. Although in that build I wouldnt have reused the stock bolts because they will gall the aluminum had and not give a proper torque reading. You have to use washers with the head bolts. ARP head bolts come with the washers and the bolts are slightly longer to accommodate the thickness of the washer. Washers with stock length bolts does not leave enough thread length for proper fastening.
I'm planning on buying a set of pro comps after I get my bottom end together. I'll be going with the 210cc with cc'd chambers.

Re: 350 Rebuild
I have an already built one for sale in the classified section. It's got big valve vortec heads, a mild cam, aluminum front cover and water pump. Comes with a good t35o0 with a shift kit, a set of coated headers, an edelbrock chrome finish manifold, and 1406 edlebrock carb. It will burn the tires off the back of your car. Just drop it in and go.

Re: 350 Rebuild
That definitely sounds good but Im looking for one to do myself to call it my own. Be pretty sweet to do a burn out and be able to say I built it! Thanks

Re: 350 Rebuild
I have WAY more than a grand into this engine in parts alone. Of all the sbc engines I have owned this is the best all around runner.
Saying "I built it" is sweet though!

Re: 350 Rebuild
I lost count a log time ago on how many SB Chevys I've built. But even then, there's much satisfaction in building my own. Performance parts have changed a lot since the 50s when I started playing with engines.
If you go through the effort to build one to replace the 305, the 383 is the best of two worlds, long stroke of a 400 without the problems some folks have with the siamesed cylinders etc.,, and a 350 block for durability.
A rotating assembly for a 383 is the way to go.
I haven't had any problems with my 400 since the 80s, but I have a BIG radiator keeping it cool.

Re: 350 Rebuild
A 383 sounds pretty good, if I get a rotating assembly what other parts do I need to upgrade besides heads and cam? Also, I want it to run on 87 octane and I think the torque from a 383 will be fun!

Re: 350 Rebuild
I also have a 383 with a burnt piston in my garage that would be perfect for you. It has a balanced rotating assembly, Keith Black pistons, World Sportsman II heads, pretty sure it has a edelbrock manifold. I have a new cam to toss in. $1200 will buy this too. The heads alone are worth the asking price. You would need to pull it apart and replace the burnt piston, install the new cam and reassemble.

Re: 350 Rebuild
Dude...
What happened to the Edelbrock set up you had going? Catch the build bug?
On a set up like that one it's probably not 87 friendly.
Are those crate motor specs or are you piecing it together?

Re: 350 Rebuild
Still haven't had the chance to put the Edelbrock on yet because I have been in Kansas at college and yess I definitely have the build bug.haha Mostly because I have to much spare time right now so I spend it thinking about engine builds. I got it from this site http://ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos1.html its pretty cool!

Re: 350 Rebuild
Those builds on that page look expensive. Just so you know some of the heads listed on that site are going to run about a grand by themselves. A good intake is about $200. New crank (again- expensive a cheap one is about $400.) TRW Pistons, rings, bearings, & all the other stuff will get pricey too. Not to discourage you- if that's what you want go for it but just make sure you know what you're getting into before you start.

Re: 350 Rebuild
Oh don't worry Im not going to start anything for awhile. I am still at the learning stage just trying to soak up as much as I can. The 77 is actually on craigslist now because as much as I love it I have always been more of a truck person so I am trying to build up to a descent 73-87 k10. This summer I want to build an engine run stand then after the car is sold start looking for a truck with a 350 that I could rebuild.
