well my car is a 73 ss 350 th350 trans, and I think it may have a very mild cam Im really unsure bought the car this way, I just about a week ago installed a Holley 600 4 barrel carb that replaced the stock 2 barrel. the car runs great in 1st and 2nd the secondaries open as they should and it does not bog just keeps climbing but as soon as you hit 3rd its like it goes flat, it dont sputter or anything it just feels like it falls on its face and the climbing stops. any ideals ?

Dumb question but is the linkage for the trans cable on the carb hooked up correctly & for that matter the vaccum line to the trans? How was it running prior to the swap? I can't imagine it's the carb itself if its a new unit.

Was the carb new? How do you know the secondaries are opening? I'm assuming any trans linkage and vacuum source is connected correctly. The spring for the secondaries can easily be changed to match your vehicle. An assortment of springs are real cheap and real easy to install.

Just keep putting in a lighter color spring until she bogs, then go one color stiffer and your good. Works great !!

well to my knowledge there is no cable from the trans to the carb, before or after the swap the kick down cable is going through the firewall I believe to the gas pedal.( I think thats where its going anyhow).and yes the vacuum line is hooked up.and before the swap it was always on its face lol, it was a 2 barrel and ran good but not really any power to it.

well the carb is new,and I can hear the secondaries open up pretty good once up in the rpm range under load.and I bought the spring kit when I got the carb, im running the tall yellow spring right now I may switch it to the short yellow spring and try that, but it runs so well in 1st and 2nd I figured that was the spring to run.

I'm not familiar with Holley's, sorry.

My Quadrajet has linkage for cables for the gas pedal and the speedo.

My guess would be fuel pump. Maybe the larger carb is requiring more fuel than your pump is putting out and the bowls dont empty untill you get to third

What BlackChevelle said....fuel pump may be OK for a 2bbl, but may not keep up with your Holley. Did you check the float level on the new Holley?
Summit Racing has a Holley fuel pump that works fine for your Holley. Catalog # is HLY-12-834
I have one, feeding a built 408 small block, and it does the job OK.

It will work OK right out of the box. Mine is feeding a Holley also.
Not to muddy this up, but there are other things that can limit fuel flow & volume, like the filter sock on the end of the pickup tube in the tank. Not a common thing, but it does happen.

Let us know if the problem gets solved, or needs more work.

lets look at this differantdo you still have the stock rear in it if so could be it flattens out because of that and a stock cam tops out at 5400 rpm and tends to go down hill from there a 353 gearing may help some and a step up in cam or try degreeing in your cam thats always good for some power

yes they are stock gears, I will be going to 373 soon. but after the car shifts to 3rd would it not drop below 5400 rpm and steady climb from there ?. I mean it climbs but much slower than it should, picture it like this lets say your in a normal 5spd car, this is how mine feels compared, 1st 2nd 4th.

maybe you have a resticted fuel line or sock in tank clogged do you still have the old fuel caister chk it becareful sometimes the vent line that runs from canister to tank collaspes and thenit wont breath and cause strange things

Tossing the canister is not a good idea.
The 1/4 inch vent line from the tank can be checked by blowing air through it, back toward the tank. If that line is open, the fumes that come from the tank will come through the canister and be brought into the intake by way of the vacuum hose to the carb.
Open vent line in the engine compartment will usually have fuel fumes and smells. That's the purpose of the canister, to purge those into the intake.

The 1/4 inch line is rarely ever plugged, unless it's been open long enough to let debris get into it.

Did your holley come with sintered bronze fuel filter in the inlet side of the fuel bowl, check to see if its not clogged. Remove it and use a better fuel filter. Those types of filters are unforgiving to fuel flow.

With that Holley pump, you will need the fittings to adapt the 3/8" line & hose with the inverted flare, to the 1/4"NPT threads in the pump.
I have that same pump on my Malibu, and it feeds the 408 small block OK.
