Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
It's a 77 malibu Landau. Do you really have to convert any wiring under the hood with the exception of the tach wire to distributor? The dash I'm putting in is (I was told) out of a 73 el camino ss. It has the the amp gauge and 120mph speedo. I have another speedo out of a Laguna I'm guessing. It has the 100mph and has blue marks with kph on it too.

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
I keep hearing the amp gauge can be a fire hazard so I probably won't hook that up and will eventually get a volt gauge when I find one. That just leaves the fuel, temp, and tach to figure out as far as wiring. I may be wrong but dont all 3 share the power and ground through the circuit sheet? So then I would just have to trace wires on sheet and find which is signal wires and plug them into appropriate spot on harness? (the one that plugs into back of the dash)

....oh yeah, and probably have to get different sending unit for temp? I hear they're different for idiot light and sweeping gauge?

Yes they are different units. Somewhere on the site there's a thread about it.

I don't think so but It makes it easier and faster (for me anyway) to just plug the whole unit into the fuse box. The tach wire goes through the firewall via the grommet in the back of the engine. Hopefully all the other wires are the same - I haven't really looked at them close. Â LOL

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
this is what I just put in recently. Just has aftermarket gauges except for fuel gauge. I just hardwired that to dash harness. Couldn't get the tach to work though..

Well I'll be tachling it next week so I'll be sure to post my results (or lack of...hopefully not. lol)

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
Just curious....so did anyone ever figure out how they should be plugged in on the dash harness for the round gauges if you're swapping over from the idiot light dash to the one with readable gauges?Limey wrote:1....lt green 10....blue

This is what I have figured out: (in no specific order other than just listing color and item it relates to). On the printed circuit there are usually 2 contacts for the bulbs, I listed whether the wire in detail is on the top or bottom of the printed circuit twist in bulb, some wires share the same path on the printed circuit.
1. Light green- hi beam (top)
2. Blue/white stripe- oil sending unit (top)
3. Tan- Emergency Brake Works when grounded out.
4. Pink- Common connection (shared by oil, brake, and Tach.
5. This is the Tach lead. (provides the signal from dizzy).
6. not used
7. Black- Common connection shared with Tachometer (middle of tach), and hi beam (bottom).
8. Brown- Amp meter (Lower)
9. not used- This is the top connection for the amp meter.
This is also the location for the volt gauge connections.
10. Blue- Right turn signal (top)
11. Gray- Common connection right turn signal (Bottom)
12. Light Blue- Left turn signal (top)
13. Tan- Fuel level indicator (top)
14. Green- Temperature gauge (top)
15. not used- This is the tailgate ajar light. (top)
16. Pink- Common connection. (Fuel,Temp. and Tailgate)
17. Yellow- Seat belt (top)
18. Yellow/ Black stripe (bottom)
If you ground out the yellow wire #17 the buzzer will sound.
As listed above, if your cluster uses an amp meter instead of a volt meter you can add your own wires to make the gauge work.
Also, If your cluster doesn't have a TACH, and you would like to add one, keep the tach in the cluster, and look at the back of it to see which studs connect to the printed circuit. Mark them, then follow the above and you can find out which 3 studs of the 6 or 7 are used to operate the tach.

I just received my order for about $120.00 worth of LED lights for the rest of my interior and a complete set of lights for my Dad's 66 chevelle. We did the same thing to his gauges. I even got the bulbs for my monster tach, autometer gauges, and even the little shift lite on the tach. Bulbs for the monster tach are known as the 074 style bulb, they consist of a single LED.

Bruiser - How did you ever make out with the '73 front end I sent you awhile back? I found the 2 little trim pieces that I missed sending along that look like little Z's. I haven't heard from you in awhile...

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
SUCCESS!!! Well i got my new ss dash today and just got finished converting the old square idiot light style dash over to the new one. Took me about an hour of just sitting looking at and tracing the wires on the circuit sheet and looking at what bruisr posted as far as what color wires do what. You said it was in no specific order but mine actually went in the exact order you posted it in 1-18 with the exception of the way you have it listed #2 and 3 were backwards. When I turned ign on the brake light came on and when I pressed e-brake the oil light came on. lol! So I switched them and WHAMO. fixed. Only thing I didn't hook up was Amp meter but fuel, temp, and tach all work great! Had to get right sending unit for temp. a whole 8 bucks. I'll put some pics up of it so far....

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
Old dash circuit sheet was toast so I had fuel gauge hardwired which worked fine. But nothing else worked.

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
Everything works from oil light when ignition's on, to e brake light when it's applied, to turn signals and dash lights. Didn't hook up amp because I heard bad things about them. Going to get a volt gauge eventually. Oh yeah, and from how bruisr listed the wire colors 1 through 19, I put them exactly in that order starting (if you unplug dash harness and look at it straight on) from bottom left to right(1-9). Then going to top from right to left (10-19). And as I said I just had to switch #2 and 3 wires.

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
I still have to replace the column with a black one I have from a car without the column shift collar. And the aftermarket gauges are going away too once the factory dash is all set. May have to paint the rest of the green black as well....we'll see

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
For the water temp gauge, just like others said, the one with the "button" style terminal. Not the spade one. I work at parts store but I just looked it up for a 73 el camino, and next to the part listing it says "with gauge" or "with tell tale light".

Re: SWITCHING FROM SWEEP TO ROUND GAUGE CLUSTER RE-WIRE
The tach was working for a day then just died all of a sudden next day when it was idling. I've been looking into it all week. Wondering if putting a tach filter in line would fix it? I posted a separate thread on it but I've been told tachs from 73 won't work on HEI ignition vehicles without converting the tach circuit board for $275.00. Which confuses me because mine WAS working...so I don't really get what happened.
