pretty sure it is a little wider and 100% you have to go to 5 x 5

Re: will 76 caprice rear end fit in an A-body?
hmm how much wider would that be?
what about the diff itself, will it fit in the A-body housing?
i dont really know much about diffs, i once helped with a rebuild of dana 36 from a corvette, but im pretty sure that is way different than a normal chevy diff?

The housing isnt going to be good neither will the axles (too long wrong bolt pattern) but the dif unit it self should work.

The center section gears fitting (just swapping the gears) will depend on the ratio on the gears. The carrier comes in two sizes, but the whole center section, carrier and all would probably fit. JB

Re: will 76 caprice rear end fit in an A-body?
thanks for the info! the reason im asking this is that i`m able to get a cheap one over here, and its a posi. i would save a ton on shipping, customs, taxes etc.
the rear suspension arm mounts are probably on a different location as well? cause if it was just a little wider and everything else was the same, that wouldnt bother me much since there is still a lot of room before my rear tyres start sticking out of the fenders.
what if it turns out to be from a 77 or later caprice? those have basically the same rear end as our cars, dont they?

If its from a 77 or later it could be a 7.5 rear in which case the carrier wont interchange. You dont want that anyway.Depends on the car it came from there were lots of options depending on the year.Remember if its a 76 back you need it all including the rims if you plan to swap it all in and measure first to make sure it fits.

Re: will 76 caprice rear end fit in an A-body?
the 77-90 box caprice had 4-3/4 unless it had the heavy duty suspension, like wagons and police cars, those had 5x5. before 77, the big bodies had 5x5dragons_lair59 wrote:now im confused here i know 91 up are 5x5 but seen in other forums the 77-90 were 5x4 3/4 so what did they do jump back and forth on the bolt paterns?

Re: will 76 caprice rear end fit in an A-body?
For the record.....the 89-90 Caprice had 5x4.75 bolt pattern and 30 spline axles. I just got a used set for $81 shipped..and then I discovered a guy who makes a tool to redrill bolt patterns for $107 shipped so I can save some time. SO...if you wanna get the bigger axle, it's possible for a machine shop..or you can ship em to me for probably a lot cheaper...

Hey, one more thing, the Wagon rear ends do NOT fit our cars unless you bring in the spring perches 3/4 of an inch...or the pocket is deep enough you can probably just run with it, it'd lower the car a hair.
