Oil Pressure Help Empty Oil Pressure Help

Engine is blowing oil right through both valve cover vents. Running about 60psi @ 2000 rpm. Buddy told me to run a catch can system. Anybody used one before and if so where do I get one. News to me.

What are the specs on the motor? Typically unless your pushing a motor hard, just use a pcv valve on one side and a breather on the other. It will take away the crankcase pressure. What kind of cylinder pressure are you getting when you crank it around?
I have run the recovery tanks, Trick breathers, and the header evac systems. But lets get some more specs first before advising anything.

There don't work for the street, but they are not to bad for track cars. They don't really start to draw until you are buzzing the motor. And you have to position the bung and insert correctly in the header or it won't draw period. They are really more of a pain in my opinion. For the race applications I build, I usually use taller, more baffled breathers or the tanks. For street drivers you really don't need much more than a PCV valve and an additional breather.

You shouldn't need much then. I'm surprised that its pushing any oil. Are you running a pcv valve? If not it might be the quickest / cheapest fix. If you don't want to use one, the tank should work ok. I'd still check the cylinder pressure when cranking, it shouldn't blow oil just cruising around.

It will work. Just my personal opinion, I like to use the tanks, and better breathers. On the current motor in my chevelle, I used a pcv valve and a breather until I added the NOS. Then I got rid of the PCV and just added another Breather. Works fine and no oil. On a nova I built, I used the header evac system. It was a drag car with a 468 cu 11.1 motor with a 300 shot of NOS. Worked fine when racing, but at idle, it wants to push back instead of drawing out. On my boat motor, I'm pushing almost 900 hp and I use (2) 4" tall billet breathers that have 3 diverted baffles inside. No oil push.

So the two breathers should be just fine ?

Ya, should work fine! The only thing is, without the PCV valve, you might get more of an oil smell.
I used these on my car. Made by K&N

Try a PCV valve. It'll work great. Its super cheap to do, and if you don't like it, you won't be out but a couple dollars. Just plumb it into the large vaccum port in the base plate of the carb. The edlebrocks are in the front and the Holleys are in the back. If you don't have that opition, and you have a spacer plate under the carb, you can always drill and tap that in the rear, and put in a nipple for the hose to connect to.

Oil Pressure Help Empty Re: Oil Pressure Help

Post by pila Mon Oct 17, 2011 11:04 pm

Seems like the drain-back holes on each end of the heads should be able to get the the oil off of the tops of the heads. Should be a reason that there's that much oil up there, that it can be pushed out. (?)
Maybe not the reason here, but some blocks partially cover the drain back holes in the rear of the heads. Found that on two different engines.

Think I am going to try the PCV. Getting tired of throwing money at it. I can always go to the catch can later.
