repainting a blue console
Whats up guys? I aquired a nice blue console out of a 76 Malibu and its in super condition with exception of the paint being a little worn. I would like to respray it and was looking to see if anyone has found what is a good color of blue that would be a very good match to the original. I'm trying to avoid trial and error and hope someone can help me find the right color blue.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!

Re: repainting a blue console
Im not sure Anthony, Id have to show you a photo I guess. Is the color code marked anywhere on the console typically? Its a medium blue, not light, not dark either.

Re: repainting a blue console
Now even if I have the code, is do you know if I can get that in a spray can for plastic/vinyl? Ive seen blues, but not sure if it was this shade or close. In any case, having a paint code is better than nothing.

Re: repainting a blue console
you should be able to get it from an automotive paint supply (the ones that body shops with there paints, take a lil while to get. but well worth it other than that i have heard of people matching the color in a rustoleum type of plastic paint and they use the wagner spray system or a similar airless paint system, which you can rent and do all the panels to match at same time .......if it was me i would go the airless route ...........hope this helps buddy

Re: repainting a blue console
Well, my interior is all black. I got what I thought to be a price I couldnt pass up. Especially since the console hinge is still perfect. Everything about this console a great except the paint is thin in the main areas of wear (along edges) or on the egdes of the console lid. I figured Id find the correct color redo it, and just re-sell it or something. It was too nice to pass up. Ive also never seen the bezel around the shifter painted the same color as the rest of the console. But this thing is original, it doesn't looked to be resprayed.

Re: repainting a blue console
no it looks in real nice shape but if you re-spray it very nice take your time with the right adhesion promoter and paint selection you could re-sell it as a black one and double your money or use it you self ............for my dash in my pics it used to be firethorn red in color

Re: repainting a blue console
I see the stuff on ebay all the time, and 90% of the consoles on there are black. I actually believe there is a demand out there for specific colors other than black. I saw a tan that was decent and that had a broken hinge go for close to 400 recently...couldnt believe it. As you know, Im trying to find a console box and lid by itself for one of these consoles, but I cant bring myself to split this one up...sounds crazy huh?

Re: repainting a blue console
I dont think I've ever seen a factory console peel off its color, and judging by the shifter bezel being blue as well, (they were always black) I'm going to guess that it's been painted before. I'd get some solevent, or thinner and try to strip some more of it off, then do a respray. do a coat, sand it lightly, and do it again. It should come out pretty sweet!
( I didnt read the entire thread, so ignore me if I pointed out something that someone else already did, heh..)

Re: repainting a blue console
I have red soft tops for 73-75 consoles that are in nice shape. Not sure that I have any bases or boxes though, if anyone is interested.

Re: repainting a blue console
I gave up trying to find the right shade of blue and took a piece of the interior trim to a local auto paint store. They custom blended a quart and computer matched it for me. Bought a Preval sprayer and it looks great!
