350 spinning 5500 RPMs:
Street carb - 473.45 cfm
Race carb - 612.7
^^^ Very surprising.

Re: help with carb selection
I always figured that the CFM for the daily driver or family car would match the formula that's been around, but a high performance CFM figure would increase the response to carburetion as well as just airflow.
That formula in the link is a good rule of thumb. According to that, my 500 Caddy engine needs only 614 CFM to go get groceries, but 794 CFM if I'm in a hurry to get to the local watering hole.

Re: help with carb selection
Just saw this sticky and its on the money. I had a 780 holley then it started acting up so i borrowed an 850 and it picked up the car a bunch 13.66 to a 12.95 455 6100 trap rpm expert advise says Racing Carb CFM : 883.41

Re: help with carb selection
What four barrel carb would y'all suggest for my 77 malibu that has a completely stock 305?

Re: help with carb selection
I'd suggest a 600 holley with vacuum secondaries. After you have it running smooth pick up the "spring kit" for the secondaries for $15 and start changing them. They come with instructions. Basically you will be putting in the lighter spring until she bogs down when you floor it. Then just put the next stiffer spring in. She'll run real good then.

Re: help with carb selection
What manifold are you using ? If you are concerned about gas mileage, don't use a Holley, go to a Q-jet instead. If not concerned with mileage, the Holley 1850 600 is a great carb, and very adjustable as mentioned by Joe. They usually do work good right out of the box too.

Re: help with carb selection
Its just the stock manifold and gas mileage isn't a huge deal..I know I won't get a lot out of this 305 but I figure ill get what I can. Any more suggestions on good easy mods would be greatly appreciated!

Re: help with carb selection
I was looking around in my grandpa's barn the other day and I found an edelbrock 1406 carb. Its a 4-barrel and I think 600 cfm. Could this possibly work on my 77 305?

Re: help with carb selection
That would fit the bill. Edelbrock carbs use metering rods for controlling the circuits much like a quadrajet does. Hey, its free, try it out.

Re: help with carb selection
That's a good carb for a stock 305 or 350. Might need a rebuild if its been sitting out for a long time though.

Re: help with carb selection
Awesome, do you think I will notice a difference from the stock 2-barrel?

Re: help with carb selection
And It'll work with a stock manifold? This was a great find.haha

Re: help with carb selection
You might have to swap out the manifold (never had a two bbl set up though). I have one that should work for you if you're interested- it's been cleaned & partially blasted just needs to be painted. It has the cross-over style chamber like the one you prob have if it's a stock GM set up.

Scroll down the link & you'll see it. It is a non EGR carb- your 1977 2 bbl Manifold should have an EGR port (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The carb should bolt right on to a cross-over type manifold for a 4 BBL (Like the one I used to have on my car that we discussed).
"EDELBROCK PERFORMER SERIES 600 CFM, ELECTRIC CHOKE CARBURETORS CALIBRATED FOR FUEL ECONOMY
Designed for small-block and small displacement big-block engines, these carbs are recommended only for stock to Performer level applications. They are not recommended for use on RPM or Torker II intake manifolds. Match with an Edelbrock Performer or Performer EPS manifold and other brands of similar design. Calibrated 2% leaner than #1405. Includes both timed and full vacuum ports for ignition advance. Comes with: Metering Jets - Primary .098, Secondary .095; Metering Rods - .075 x .047; Step-Up Spring - yellow (4" Hg). Use our Carb Stud Kits #8008 or #8024 if needed, see Installation Items. For auto trans throttle lever adapters and more, see Tuning Accessories. "

Re: help with carb selection
yeah if your using the stock intake manifold you have to run a carb spacer (10 bucks) at a local store then it should bolt up and be ready to go!
Ive always used the Edelbrock carbs and have nothing bad to say about them even the ones ive droped, broke, threw they still never let me down.
Now as for Holley...I got one just the other day and it looks like its a decent carb but ill run it and see how it goes, if not its gettin a Edelbrock!

Re: help with carb selection
I've always run a holley. That being Said, holleys are high maintence, I disassemble /regasket mine about every three years or so. It never let's me down in the performance department, and is easily tuned. I've heard edelbrocks Are more true to the original q-jet design. I have no experience with edelbrock carbs, so I can't give a first hand account.

Re: help with carb selection
The Edalbrock are copies of the venerable Carter AFB type series, which were excellent carbs back in the day. Some forums have folks that have had issues with those that Edelbrock sells.
I personally would use a Q-jet, which has the small primaries, that give good response and mileage, and have BIG secondaries for when you put your foot in it.
My Malibu with the 400 has a Holley 3310 on it. It runs fine, but is a gas guzzling SOB for sure. I'm working on a Q-jet to replace the Holley.
