Vortec engine question Empty Vortec engine question

Hi guys, I have a 97 5.7 vortec motor out of my Tahoe that was totaled by a Turd head drunk driver, I was thinking of dropping it into my 'guna. Just wondering if it's possible to put a factory tuned port setup on it with a painless harness, and aftermarket PCM or if I will run into issues with the vortec heads. I was thinking of using an LT1 setup but those have no provision for a rear mount distributor.

I didn't know there was a tuned port intake for the Vortec motors. You might be able to pull all of the wiring & factory computer from the Tahoe for the swap. I'm not really electronically literate though.

I'm gonna pass on the stock MPFI setup the Tahoe had, the injector poppets like to plug up on them. And the original PCM got wasted in the crash. I did find an edelbrock TPI intake for vortec heads for 450. Kinda steep considering I'll still need to get high flow runners and throttle body. It seems I might end up rethinking this one...

I would put a vortec airgap manifold & electric fuel pump on it and go. You will be enjoying the engine while working out the details for fuel injection if that is what you want to end up with.

Any fuel injection setup will require mods to the fuel system that take time and $$.

Sounds like a plan & you could always add TBI or even direct port EFI to a carb'd intake later on.

Don't waste your time or money on a TPI setup. They where not performance oriented, and are really overshadowed by today's systems, I would do the MPFI swap with the stock stuff, Don't worry about the poppets, I have had sevral trucks and no problems other than replacing the factory intake gaskets, they ran fine. Hell my 2002 ZR2 with a vortec 4.3 has never had anything done to the fuel system in 206k other than a fuel pump , had a tahoe with 300k on it no problems what so ever.

I've done a few EFI swaps and they aren't a Friday afternoon install , race on Saturday type of project.

The '97 Vortec has a distributor provision, so yes a TPI could be used on this engine. For a street driver, you will not notice the difference between MPFI and batch fire (in performance or fuel mileage).

No, LT1 uses a front drive mounted distributor so it's an oddball.

Edelbrock makes a pro flow kit which is a direct bolt on.

Weiand also has the Stealth Ram EFI Intake Manifold that could be used with a Painless style MEFI system.

Going from a carb, you will need a high pressure fuel pump and two high pressure fuel lines for supply & return fuel.

There are alot of details, but once finished, drivability is remarkable.

Thanks -

Jerry

Any hints on where I could get the factory PCM from the tahoe reprogrammed to delete the post cat O2 sensors?

I'd love to find some pc software to do this so I could play around with it.

This sounds like what you want to do, but it looks like this info is for older systems.

My daily driver is a '97 Chevy truck with that PCM. Never had any need to do any cal work on it.

The OBDII compliant cal software I have used is LS1edit.
The new version has vortec motor capability for trucks.
The old version I have isn't compliant.

HP Tuners is the other popular software but I haven't used it.
It probably also does a vortec also but their licensing is limiting to 1 or 2 cars which can be inconvenient.

So you are going forward on this project?
What are you using for a loom?

Thanks -
