1974 Monte Carlo engine & engine bay restoration.
Finally began the engine restoration on the Monte Carlo. Nearly completely torn down after only one afternoon of work. In this thread, I'll post pictures and detail each days work. For your enjoyment, but also when it is complete, I am going to make a (long) Word Document completely outlining the process to keep along with my car's documentation.
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show
DECEMBER 26, 2010 - The Tear Down Part I.
Can't believe how mint the radiator is.
The moisture on the battery tray is WD-40. I sure hope I can salvage this tray...if not, you'll hear about it!
Note the original sticker still on the power steering pump. You can bet your bottom dollar, that's not going anywhere
Original and completely functioning air pump.
The vacuum lines still have the original factory wrapping around them. Going to try my damnedest to salvage it.
The ever-so-massive Monte Carlo fan shroud.
Part of the accelerator/cruise control.
Original ignition coil.

Looks like its going to be nice. The anti freeze was pretty done huh? I would get an air hose and get the rest out of the heater core too. Gently dont give it the full blast all at once and it will come out.

Even as it is now, it's not original. It was poorly touched up before I got it.

I always open my hood...even how it has looked previously. But now, I'll be even more proud!
Travis, what do you mean? The tray itself, or the amount of rust? Lol.

I would at least try to mask off what isn't suppose to be orange.
Not that it makes that Malibu look any better...little rough!

JANUARY 1, 2011 - The Tear Down Part II
Got 'er all torn down today. My dad wants to pull the engine to repaint it, for it will be easier. Leavin that to him. If he wants to do it, fine. If not, fine too. I don't care, as long as it gets painted. After the work on the car itself stopped, he wanted to continue working on the parts on the bench after I left. If he wants to do it while I'm not there, go ahead...I ain't stoppin him. Went to see what was up a few times, and he successfully removed the air tubes off of the manifolds with zero problems. I would not have even attempted it. That will make sandblasting and painting the manifolds a lot easier with the tubes off. I also did in fact verify that the engine and trans is numbers matching. Anywho...time for pictures.
Steering shaft.
Paint marks(aka chalk marks) which were protected by the plastic shaft cover.
Trans number.
Delco-Remy on the original alternator.

Re: 1974 Monte Carlo engine & engine bay restoration.
Since it's out, are you going to tear it down a little further to replace all the old gaskets? Would be a shame to put in all the work you have so far, just to have it leak all over the brand new paint.
