'93-'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee box! or the 73 SS box is really good as well

GC '93-'98 boxes offer a faster steering ratio (12.7:1) making your steering more responsive. Further, the T-Bar is bigger thereby giving you a better road feel as well. Additionally, the appropriate GC box lines up with the factory frame holes, uses the same length/thread bolts to hold box on. You will need to get a rag joint from a mid 70s chevy truck and either use the LEEs adapters or swap to the new style metric O ring lines (which is what I did) I just went through the salvage and got all my parts

The 73 SS box runs a varible ratio of 15 to 13:1 and runs a large Torsion bar 17-22 for more road feel. The malibu box has a varible ratio of 16 to 13:1 and runs a 12-17 or a 14-20 Torsion bar

what do you mean by metric style o rings are you talking about the ones that are on the earlier 90s chevys with serpentine system

so in theory i can get the stuff new and it should bolt right in just get the gc box and newer chevy lines

Yes but you will have to change the high pressure output adapter inside your pump to swap from the flared line to the o ring line. Its easy to change, it just unscrews from the back of the pump, but be careful as it has a valve and spring behind it, that will need to go back in.

If your going to buy new, might as well find a fast ratio box that uses the correct lines. I perfer fixed ratio and the highest torsion bar size. which is why I went with the Jeep box. Cost me about $60 bucks at the salvage to do the swap.

I bought a steering box for a 1975 Z-28 camaro. It definitely doesn't turn as sharp in a parking lot as it used to, but it is so much tighter now, and is awesome to drive.

Some company out there does make a rebuilt-steering box that has a tighter turn radius of the 80's GM cars but also retains the older size o-rings. They mentioned the company in an older PHR when they did the swap on their Laguna.

ya its classic performance products (cpp)or something like that but id figure id shop around and ask people on here a good one instead of going out and buying one because a magazine says so

Summit Racing lists two companies, Flaming River, and AGR for quick ratio boxes. Expensive.
I bought my quick ratio 12;1 box from Advance Auto Parts, for the Malibu.

That's right. The 12:1 means 12 turns of the steering wheel from lock to lock. So the smaller the first number the less movement need in the steering wheel to turn the tires the same angle.

The ratio, ie 12 to 1, would be 12 turns of the wheel to one turn of the pitman shaft, which of course only turns a fraction of a turn. The ratio only affects how many turns from lock to lock, or extreme right to extreme left. Although I'm not sure of stops within some gear boxes selves (?) Old cars had like 16 to 1 and even higher ratios, making it take more turns of the wheel for a corner etc. Quick steering is like 12 to 1 compared to 16 to 1, for example. The gear box for my Malibu was listed as 2 1/2 to 3 turns, lock to lock, so I would think the stops on the front spindles were considered in that spec.

My bad, I thought that 12 turns of the wheel seems a bit much! That's what I get for speaking without thinking.

Okay, I have read this whole post and I have a stupid question. How can you turn your steering wheel 12 times? I can't turn it 6 times left or right from dead center.

Its a ratio, how many turns of the input shaft would equal one turn of the output if the output could make a complete 360* turn.
Your pitman arm will only go a certain degrees of travel through a circle, the steering boxes have predetermined "stops" in side the boc to accomodate different vehicles. Therfore the output shaft will only turn 60* or 80* or what ever is neeeded for the vehicle. Thats why youll only get 3 turns or 3-1/2 turns (or whatever ratio and stops your box has in it) on your steering wheel before it stops
