Steering box

Hello Gents! My current stock steering box has a lot of play. I am considering this one for my 73 SS,
it lists it at 2.6 to 2.3 turns lock to lock.
This one has a quicker ratio and that's what I am looking for.
Anyone please chime in and let me know what you think, will my coupler and pitman arm fit? I don't have any experience
with sourcing / changing one so I would appreciate your expertise.

Do you have any adjustment left at the screw on the top of your box? A good alignment shop should be adjusting your play when they do an alignment.

Also, power steering service.com can rebuild your box and make it a quick ratio. That's where I had my box rebuilt. Mine is a manual.

I bought a "rebuilt" quick-steer box from Advance auto. I had to adjust it twice after I installed it, Same deal with the box I installed in the wife's Jeep. Seems like they don't even bother to adjust the rebuilt boxes. Good help must be hard to find at those rebuild places !!

I used one from an 86 MC SS. I overhauled it myself. It's not to hard with a GM shop manual. Zero leaks and nice and tight. I used a rag joint from a mid '80's square body pickup. It will mate the old-style column with the metric splines on the box. Most of the parts store rebuilt ones will probably loosen up like an old bar fly after a few thousand miles.

There is no adjustment left in mine. My car is in storage and I don't have easy access to it right now and working 60 hrs. a week doesn't help either. I cant really pull mine and send it out to be rebuilt due to the lead times involved. I guess my question was if my Pitman arm and rag joint would fit this box? The specs are
Input Shaft Spline Count 31 + Flat & Groove and the Output Shaft Diameter (in) 1.25 (it doesn't give a spline count on the pitman shaft.)

Looks like that one will work for you. They do list it as fitting 64~73. As far as output shaft, I don't think that got changed throughout the years. My '73 pitman arm fit an '86 box. Input shaft was changed to a smaller diameter when they went metric.

The 86 monte box will probably have the o-ring fittings. I had to use that year box for a 77 skylark that I put a 1992 serpentine belt setup on. I believe 1986 was the only year that had the o-ring fittings and the old spline count for the input/output shafts. I spent a LOT of time researching this simply because I didn't want to use adapters for the hydraulic fittings.

I understand that there is a grand Cherokee gear box that is a direct fit for this generation.

The 86 Monte box did have the "O" ring fittings, I swapped the fitting at the back of the PS pump (Large 1" or so nut) to the o ring style from a donar pump. swapped the original ps pressure line for the newer o ring style.

The Grand Cherokee has the "Bubble" flare fittings. I believe these guys have kits to make the original hose work on it though.

The article talks about the swap from a Cherokee to a 2nd gen A body. Are 3rd gen and 2nd gen boxes interchangeable?

Maybe you could try the one from rock-auto. The price is right, bolt in swap. I would check the lock-lock turns and the pre-load before you install it. You'll need a needle type inch pound wrench. The procedure can be found in a GM service manual. I could post it also. I think it is supposed to be done dry and not hooked up to anything. If it's out of wack, send it back.

I looked at the procedure in the Service manual, why would I need a needle type?

To Measure the preload adjustment. Book doesn't show needle wrench?

Correct me if Im wrong but are you guys referring to a bar type torque wrench as opposed to the "click" style torque wrench.

I use the click style when assembling engines. But I use the bar type when setting preload on a pinion bearing in the rear axle.

Yes bar type. I always referred to it as a needle type. Didn't mean to confuse. Same thing on the steering box. Attach it to the input shaft and measure the preload or amount of drag.

I think Ill take your advice and try the Rock auto box, Ill pick up a needle/bar type torque wrench. Ill let you know how it go's .

I see Lares steering gear at several sites for the G3s. Was wondering about the quality or lack thereof. Also whether they have stock replacement? As I have mentioned elsewhere, my Chevelle is a daily driver more or less and has been its entire existence. I don't drive it every day of course but at least a couple of times each week and it is not used in racing or other similar pasttimes.

I don't have an immediate need but I'm trying to identify potential replacements for all parts other than the engine block, tranny or drivetrain/rear axle.
