ok here is how i did it.

i already had the bumper chrome and plastic corners off.

1. Remove everything attached to the bumper...brackets and all except you can leave the parking lights. make sure that you note where they all went

2. Remove the 8 bolts (4 on each side of car, 2 on each side of bracket) (the bolts are 3/4" socket and the nuts are a 5/8 wrench) that hold the bumper to the shocks, if you can remove the 2 larger bolts, itd be easier, but I couldnt get them out with the filler installed

3. After removing the bolts across the bumper reinstall all of the chrome plated head bolts with some oil or anti-seize so it makes them easier to install and remove later on. So now all thats on the bumper is those bolts and the parking lights

4. Now I hope you noted where the brackets were located. Take the inside brackets that held the bumper to the shocks, swap sides and turn them inside out so they protrude inside the bumper, leave the attaching bolts loose. (OK see the inside brackets (ones closest to the middle of car) take those off and swap sides. To rebolt them on youll have to turn them around so the bottom side of the bracket where it bolts to the bumper is going towards the radiator, instead of point forwards (away from the radiator) Then just remove the outside brackets and throw them away or whatever

I AM NOT FININISHED YET____still need a little help ill ask bcss and continue with this later

If you get it on there and dont like how unsupported it feels, you might want to make a bracket from the top of the bumper brackets you swapped to the inside of the bumper to add top support. I didnt mess with it because we were trying to lose weight. Also with this way the bumper shocks are still usuable but if you do hit anything the shocks will compress and the bumper will go into your fenders so while your that far you might want to weld up the shocks so it hold the bumper in place and you dont risk your fenders as much. We welded the shock tubes on both sides and cut off the excess thats inside the frame to lose more weight.

can you show a picture of the way its mounted?
i get close to getting it too fit but it just wont fit on there now, did you have to grind the top of the brackets to let the long bumper support that the (chrome attaches to) sit properly down to get the holes to line up?

ok now this is pissing me off and theres another dent in the bumper Mad and some bloody knuckles, brused feet and knees, keeps falling off, anyways, i have tried it all and there is always something that wont work it wont go over the shock mount cuz of the way they go up on the ends its just an inch to far out to get it to work. only thing i can think of is to gring the top of the shock mounts flat?

i was thinking about grinding the bottom of the brackets to conture with the bumper inside then cutting the holes out a little further where the bracket attaches to the shocks so i can move it down more and a small cut in the same holes going toward the front of the car to move the bracket more toward the bumper so it can line up.

Are those the brackets that were closer to the radiator? or the ones closest to the parking lights? The ones that were right behind the parking lights were to be discarded. The ones closest to the radiator were to swap sides as meaning passenger and drivers side. There will be no brackets behind the parking lights.

hay corey instead of having two bolts like in the picture use only the top one i guarantee that will fix your problem i only got four bolts holding my bumper on and it works fine till i fab up some custom brackets

p.s. it aint that heavy

we just did it on the SS, the bumper is sagging so we are gonna have to figure something out to get the top to come in towards the grille.

Post by The Dude Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:27 pm

Anyone ever do this on a post-73 car? I got the 73 bumper (green car posted at the beginning) right next to my 76 & the mounting is WAY different. I could just mount the 73 bumper & shocks onto my 76 frame for now.... Rolling Eyes but I do eventually want to figure this one out for later models too. I took the front bumper & hood off last night & swear the car sits 2" higher! From the looks of it, I might have to do some welding? Dan, I'll probably bring it down so you can see what I'm talking about. How's tomorrow sound? LOL

If anyone has done it successfully..... please... feel free to do a write up with pics... seriously. Either that or I might end up being the guinea pig on this one.
