Sucking in the bumpers. 76 bu.

Anyone cut down the bumper shocks (tubes) to suck the bumpers into the body a little? On the same note, is there a better way... for instance removing the inner structure? Completely remove the plastic trim?
I would love to drop the weight of the innards, but I would end up having to rig an attachment from the bumper to the shocks. Wouldn't be too tough, but if anyone has an example it would help.

The plastic filler in the bumper? Have you thought of just making the whole front end fiberglass? They sell whole front ends. Check this out!!

Both bumpers have a formed inner steel structure that attach to the shock tubes. My first thought was to cut a couple inches out of the center of the tubes, but I could kill two birds with one stone by dropping the weight out of the bumper. Fu**ing thing has to weigh 75 lbs.
Otherwise, it's hole-saw time.
Fiberglass is for drag racers... I'm a hot rodder. I need to be able to sit on the hood and drink a beer.

We are sucking in the bumpers also. Just removing the filler and drilling holes in the shocks and welding them solid after collapsing where we need them. After they are welded we are cutting everything uneccessary off to save weight, but not compromise strength.
If your really looking for weight loss. Cut the inner structure out of the doors. That crash bar weighs a ton and once out itll be easier on the door bushings.

USED WITH PERMISSION THIS GUY JUST JUST DID THIS SAME THING (BUT TO THE REAR)

Well I finally got tired of looking at the big ugly bumper on my Laguna so I decided to cut it up and move it in.
This is how it looked in the beginning---
some of the cutting pics----
Then the after pics-----
I thought it looked too black in the back now so I thought I'd run the blue from the stripes around to break up the black a bit--not sure if I like it yet but if not-- it's easy to paint it all black again.. :biggrin:
So there you have it not only is the bumper in closer to the body and angled at the bottom to follow the body angle versus being straight but it's about half as heavy as it used to be due to removing the huge brace in it.
Just thought I'd share it with you all.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It took me about 60-70 hrs to do this and other than buying some welding wire ( that I would have needed anyway )some sand paper and some bolts I didn't spend anything on it, I had some leftover black enamel and the candy blue that I did the stripe in originally and my place of work "donated" :biggrin: some grinding discs.
DoctorLarry I originally thought I could just take the bracing out from behind the bumper and drill new holes and bolt the bumper up directly to the pistons but once I got it apart----
I realized that the brace was wider than I thought and it would move the bumper too far forward making the back end look too flat so I got some 3/8 x 5in. carriage bolts and some 3/8 steel tubing that I cut the lengths on to set the bumper where I wanted it, put some flat washers between the tube pieces and the bumper to help spread the load when I tighted the bolts and welded the carriage bolts into the new holes I had drilled. Then I sprayed the back with rubberized under coating to help slow down the rust----
Then I just ground the heads of the carriage bolts off and smoothed everything out--
I am working on making a bracket to use to replace the tubes and to be able to cut the bolts off shorter but I didn't have time to do it this time since this is my daily driver
I did use my old pick up for a few days but the muffler decided to blow out on me and was way too loud so I had to get the Laguna drivable sooner than I had planned.
I also will have to look for some pics of the interior I know I have some somewhere.

Thats cool> thanks for posting that Goon. Gives me a few Ideas on the front bumper for the malibu. I want to keep it chrome just suck it in and theres no chrome shop local thats any good.

I just sent my bumpers out to be straightened and the slots for the jacks filled in re-chromed and the dent's worked out to be show room quality for 350 each.

Hm. Spacing out a little... Good to know the structure can go, but it looks like I am still going to have to go down to the original mounting points. Thanks for the input gang.
