1 inch rear sway bars Impala SS etc
Finding a 1 inch rear sway bar that is a direct fit has become an adventure of sorts. The repros either are not direct fit or are 1 and 1/8 inch in diameter. The later downsized B platforms fit the A body of course but the curve ball is that there seem to be 2 different sizes floating around: either 1 and 1/8 inch (seems much more common) and 1 inch. Now I have found what appears to be a 3rd size rear sway bar from the 80s and 90s unless folks are just mis-measuring. This is GM part number 10207649. i don't have a 90s part catalog but what I could find on it was that it is 24mm in diameter which translates to about 15/16 of an inch!
Does anyone have a part number for the 1 inch rear sway bar or know anything about the part number mentioned above?
Part of the problem is that these days listers seem to have fixated on Impala SS as magic words so they are listing parts that may not have come from a 94-96 SS as if it were OEM.

Limey SE wrote:91-96 Gives Caprice/ Impala from what I have researched will give you the 1" and 1 1/8" and they literally are a bolt in deal I have one and its installed
There was No part number on it That I could see before I painted to match the UMI bars
Thanks Limey. OK that makes sense. The sellers are grabbing these bars off of a Caprice and then saying/implying they came from an Impala SS. So that must be why they are all 1 and 1/8 inch.
I wouldn't assume your rear bar would have the same part number I listed above anyway since it is a different diameter. I'm just puzzled where part #10207649 came from and what the actual diameter is?
The reason I was avoiding the 1 and 1/8 sway bar was because I wanted the proper proportion between the front and rear. Folks here and elsewhere have said that 1 and 1/4 inch front bar matches best with a 1" rear bar. Remember my Malibu is very stock. I just never thought the 1 inch would be this hard to find. Also sellers don't bother to measure them even if you ask them to.

Re: 1 inch rear sway bars Impala SS etc
This is what I could find on the mystery rear sway bar 10207649.
Stabilizer bar.
Part Number: 10207649
Supersession(s): 10207649; 01633752
Fits Caprice, Deville, Electra, Fleetwood , Impala, Parisienne, Roadmaster, SPECIAL
24mm. Buick, Chevrolet, Olds. Ride & handling susp.
The #10207649 bar replaced bar #01633752 in 1992. Note the diameter of 24mm which I have found in several different places.
The bar #01633752 is stated as interchangeable with bar#00526697 starting in 1986. Not sure if this means that the #0052 bar is incompatible then with G3s but the fitment says that it is compatible with 90s era B bodies. The #00526697 bar does seem even more obscure than the two others as I found very few references to it. The overall dimensions of these bars seem identical.

Don't know if this constitutes proof but a poster on the Impala SS Forum back in 2009 had a long list of part numbers for the Impala SS. Link follows.
https://www.impalassforum.com/threads/list-of-maintenance-part-numbers-old-sticky.227215/
In this list courtesy of Big Bad Wolf there is a section for swaybar parts as follows:
Swaybar - (ha) Front Mor-86015 $ -
Swaybar - (ha) Rear Mor-86516 $ -
Swaybar - Bushings 32mm For Ha Swaybar 26039956 $ -
Swaybar - Bushings 34mm For Ha Swaybar 14094388 $ 9.89
Swaybar - Endlinks F-body Style 10221779 $ 7.05
Swaybar - Front 457923 $ 64.58
Swaybar - Front End Link Kit 88912162 $ 7.69
Swaybar - Link Kit Similar To P/n 10221779 88912214 $ 15.21
Swaybar - Rear 10207649 $ 61.35
Note that the part number 10207649 is listed as the rear sway bar for the Impala SS . is it possible that the stock bar for the 94-96 SS is actually 15/16" or 24mm rather than 1 inch or 26mm as commonly thought?

Re: 1 inch rear sway bars Impala SS etc
Thanks for the info. To be clear I'm not questioning whether a 1 inch rear sway bar would be satisfactory for a 1.25 inch front bar. The problem is that there seems to be 3 different bars that apparently come from the Impala SS which is odd. I found the part number for the 15/16" bar in my post above. I can't find part numbers for the 1 inch or the 1 and 1/8 inch bar. Did you see any part number on your bar? It's hard to judge from that picture but it seems heavier than some other listed bars. Did you measure it? An additional problem is that fleabay sellers refuse to provide me with any info about the bars they are listing as SS compatible.

Re: 1 inch rear sway bars Impala SS etc
The rear sway bars from a 1973-1977 "A" body will fit a 1977-1996 "B" body and will work the other way around. It does not have to specifically be a 1994-1996 Impala SS.

Iggy
I realize all of these bars will fit. I'm just trying to figure out why there are three different bars that sellers say come from 94-96 Impala SS and what the stock bar was? I do want to avoid getting the 1 and 1/8 inch bar but sellers don't provide the diameter and refuse to measure when I request it. At this point, what limited info I have been able to find indicates the 15/16th inch (24mm) bar as stock which is a bit of a surprise.
