OMC Marine 305 - worth buying?
I found this 1977 OMC 230 305 V8 for sale for cheap. It supposedly runs. Anyone know anything about this engines?
My 350 needs valve seals and possibly guides. So instead of rebuilding the heads, I was thinking of upgrading them to something with a smaller chamber to bump the compression. Anyone have any idea what heads this 305 would have? Would the heads from this 305 be a worthwhile upgrade for my otherwise stock '76 350? Eventually I will build an engine for the car, but for now it'd be nice to get a bit more performance from it. If I did use it for heads, I'd strip it and part it out. I am sure some of the marine specific parts should sell.
So is it a worthwhile buy?

Ask them to take a Valve cover off to give the heads casting NUMBER BUT ALL in all the Monte SS from 84 and similar would be better to use

If its raw water cooled engine then walk away. The water passages are all corroded. And from the looks of the water neck and water pump hose connections it was.

Good call on the fresh water thing. I asked him for the casting number for the heads but he sent me the block number which is 460777. The suffix code shows T08089MJ. I think I am going to pass on this one. I was just looking to do a simple head upgrade on the cheap.
Monte SS heads would be good, they just don't ever turn up around here.

Other than having to get a new intake look for a set of vortec heads. They seem to be the hot thing.

Unless you get the engine for free, it's used up. Boats are hard on engines. I could go on but in summary if you are on a budget, walk away.
