Has anyone had any success finding info about current ownership of a car using a vin number. I have been told that the DMV will not release this info. Carfax types of services will only go back to 1981, when the government changed the vin number requirements.

I think it differs from state to state. Some will release the info, some won't.
Depends on whether or not it's considered "public record".

PS EDIT=I think there is a site where you can post a description of a car and a VIN to look for old cars. orphancar.com?? or something like that. If I remember correctly, there is access to some sort of database through it as well.

Bobby is right on that, I do believe.  It depends on the state.

I've run title searches using the VIN here in Illinois, but the last time I did that was a number of years ago.  The availability & ability to obtain information may've changed since.

Wish a database existed to track cars like that.....
