Re: Cam choices galore!
Unfortunately it's not that simple. If you put that cam I guarantee you'll be pulling the engine not long after. All that metal is in there and it will destroy the bearings in no time if it hasn't already.

x2, I would pull the oil filter and cut it open to see if any metal and/or how much is in there before I did anything else.

Re: Cam choices galore!
Having lost a cam & lifters from a dumb mistake, like letting an engine sit too long, I can tell you that those metal particles will get into every crook & cranny, oil galleries etc in the engine block and heads etc. Then it's time for a complete tear-down & cleaning. And even then it's tough to get all the particles cleaned out. I just have the machine shop boil the block & heads & get them clean.

If you blocked your oil filter bypass you may have caught the majority of metal debris.

Re: Cam choices galore!
All that metal had to fall down over the crank and rods before it ever got to the filter.

Went thru the bearings at least once... Unfortunately even once and... They'll be junked. Can hope for good oil pressure... But that will diminish quickly.

Re: Cam choices galore!
Cam and Lifters ordered with Cam assembly lube... Ships today it says, but didn't give an arrival date.
We will probably tear it all apart and clean it.

Re: Cam choices galore!
Okay... The engine was coming together, but has came to a screeching halt. With the number 1 piston at tdc the valves would not adjust as normal. When rotated to get number 6 up it seems that you can adjust them as if you had the number 1 piston up. However either way some of the lifters appear to be too high to adjust properly. I was told that you can adjust them one at a time, but I not sure exactly how this works. Anyone done this or have instructions/video of the procedure?

Re: Cam choices galore!
I always adjust them one at a time.
Start with number one....go by the firing order, and each 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation will be the next one in the firing order.
Marking the balancer with chalk or something similar at each 90 degrees, which will help with position...
If number 6 is in position, turn the crank one turn, to bring number 1 into position, to get started.
Hope this helps !!

#1 and #6 are opposite each other in the firing order, so they will both be at the top of the bore at the same time. But only one of them is ready to fire at a time. Spin the motor around until you see the #1 intake valve open and then go closed. Continuing to rotate the engine as the balancer NOW comes to 0 the engine is at #1 TDC.

Re: Cam choices galore!
Just curious did you add the zinc additive when changing oil in the engine? I'm just wondering what would make the came and two lifters ware out like that?
Sorry to hear you had to take it apart.

Re: Cam choices galore!
Yep had the Zinc additive in it. Not sure what happened. Regardless, we have a new cam which is the same as before and the matched lifters.
We got it started and let it run for a couple minutes. The tranny was low on fluid. My uncle I found a bad leak around the pan.
He is going to change the transmission pan gasket and filler up with fluid. I am going over to install a borrowed tach so that we can monitor it during the break in. Heard a bit of lifter pecking while it ran. Wondering if it has been adjusted properly or if it just hasn't built up the lifters completely yet.
It may be weird to ask for prayers on this, but I could really use them. I need a car to drive...

Re: Cam choices galore!
Dont over zinc. You need good oil with good zinc and phosphorous numbers. And if you have to add zinc, no more than 2 ounces. Ive read the tests that adding anything to an oil messes with the oils additive package.
Adding zinc is not a cure all. Better to have the correct oil.
You have to do some research and go with what your comfortable with

She lives... Running great, sounding and looking good while doing it. Will try to get a video of it soon.
