Rear End
i found a rear axle out of a police interceptor caprice on CL for $75 or trade for some parts i have lying around. the guy claims it is a posi trac rear end if this is true and it apperead to be a 4 link setup will this swap right into my car or would i need to modify my suspension to handle this newer rear axle. obvioulsy brake lines will need modified being it is a disc setup. if the axle housig would not work would i be able to use the gear and posi trac assembly in my axle ?

Re: Rear End
the outer brackets will have to be replaced with chevelle ones, other than that the upper control arms will bolt on and the length will work. The lug pattern is different so the axles will have to be taken somewhere to be drilled.

Re: Rear End
so, other than the outer brackets and wheel bolt pattern, the late Caprice rear is a bolt in deal?

Re: Rear End
the later Caprices- starting in '90 or so- went to 30 spline axles, and your stock axles are 28 spline.

Re: Rear End
Wait, how is the lug pattern different? Did they use the truck pattern? If it's this easy to drop in a better rear, I'm all about it.

Re: Rear End
Most of them are larger brakes as well. The center hub is larger. If you have the axles redrilled for the 4-3/4" pattern you may have to have the axle turned down a bit. We are putting a caprice rear end in a 69 Elco right now.

Re: Rear End
I have put the Caprice HD axle in my 76 Laguna. The only problem you will have is the Caprice unit uses metric hardware which is larger diameter (I think, might be the other way around). The holes in the control arms will need to be enlarged to take the bigger hardware, otherwise there will be play if you use the smaller hardware. Looks like 14 mm on the lowers and 12mm on the uppers.
I will be using the Caprice front spindles also (bigger brakes) so my wheels will all be the 5X5 pattern.

Re: Rear End
so you're saying that a later Caprice rear end is pretty much a bolt in deal into the 73-77 A body, other than the bolt holes?
look like i'm gonna find me a cop car axle with 3.42 gears and a set of 94-96 front spindles, which are lighter and stronger than the earlier parts.

Re: Rear End
Correct-a-mundo, also the brake hook-up issue. My cop car rear axle had drum brakes so I will be updating to disk. Remember that there may be an issue with the master cylinder if you go disk-disk.

Re: Rear End
Cool, So i guess that the 73-77 rear will not work in a earlier chevelle frame?

Re: Rear End
Let me go check it out for ya black. I got both. I think there was a difference in the control arm angles? I can't remember exactly, but I did try to put my 12 bolt under my first 76 & there was something that needed to be reworked.
