Rear Moog Spring choice Empty Rear Moog Spring choice

Post by bracketchev1221 Thu Mar 27, 2014 10:18 am

I want to raise up the back of my 76 a little bit. I am stuck on the 6381 or the 5387 Moog springs. The 5387 is a 157 lbs rate spring compared to the stock 126, where the 6381 is 198 and the station wagon spring. I have seen pictures of a white 76 on here with the 6381 but I don't know how the 5387 spring looks. Does anyone have any experience with these springs?? Thanks.

If your springs are good, I'd go.with a spacer instead of making the rear stiffer. Loads on ebay 1/2" on up to a couple of inches.

I debated alot on rear springs also. I went with the moog varible rate spring that it called for on my 70. Couldnt be happier. It sets where I want it and can handle a load with out bottoming out.

I want it to be able to plant the tire, but I don't want it to just roll over from being too soft. The Moroso trick springs put a stiffer spring in the passenger rear to battle the the body roll these cars have when they leave the starting line. But they don't make them for 73-77. Only 68-72 and 78-88. I know the factory springs has that riding on air feeling, so I am thinking it could stand to use a slightly stiffer spring. But I am not looking for road course handling so I don't want it too stiff.

I think I like the way this car sits, but he calls it firm but not harsh. Which leads me to believe it is much stiffer than stock with the 198's. Which is not ideal for drag strip launches.

How about putting in an air bag on the right rear? Simple to install and you can easily adjust the pressure anytime.

You maybe correct Bracketchev on the 6381's being to firm for a perfect launch for straight line performance. I've been curious myself how these would do if I mounted a pair of slicks to plant more power to the pavement. I know I do like them for spirited to normal driving & cruising. Not a road coarse spring but firm enough to greatly reduce body roll & experience no wheel hop what so ever. I think Joe73's idea with an air bag on the right side along with 5387 springs might be the recipe for obtaining a perfect launch.

I put Moog s/w springs speced for a '74 Malibu wagon in my '74.  #6381  they ride nice, but really didn't lift it all that much (maybe 1/2 inch).

This is what I am considering.

I found someone in another forum who has a low 10'sec G3 Chevelle.  He is using a 6381 with airbag on the passenger rear, and a stock spring on the driver rear.  Same idea as the Moroso trick springs.

dynchel; could you please provide a measurement, from the ground to center of wheel lip for both the front and back of your car. Also, which front springs are you using?

The fronts are big block springs with one coil cut off. I'll get the measurements tonight when I'm home.

This would accomplish the same thing as the moroso springs.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

bracketchev1221, I believe the 6381 (wagon) and 5387 (HD Coupe & Sedan) springs are pretty close.

5387:
Spring rate: 157.0 lb per inch
Free height: 15.42"
Although it states 8.5" for installed height, I will use 9.0"

Load to compress to 9.0" is 1007.94 lb's
15.42" - 9.0" = 6.42"
6.42 x 157.0 lb = 1007.94 lb

Load to compress to 10.0" is 850.00 lb's
15.42" - 10.0" = 5.42"
5.42" x 157.0 lb = 850.00 lb

6381
Spring rate: 198.00 lb per inch
Free height: 14.34"
Installed height: 9.0"

Load to compress to 9.0" is 1057.32 lb's
14.34" - 9.0" = 5.34"
5.34" x 198.0 lb = 1057.32 lb

Load to compress to 10.0" is 859.32 lb's
14.34" - 10.0" = 4.34"
4.34" x 198.0 lb = 859.32 lb

They seem pretty close to me.  I am strongly considering the 5387 for my Malibu.
Since I have the air bags, I can always just pump the right rear up at the track.
