Holley 650 #R84014-3
Hey guys,
I just took my carb off because I can't get the car tuned right. It needs rebuilding. By all accounts, it is more than obsolete - some kind of mutant design. It is a Holley 650 #R84014-3. I am thinking about selling it. Should I sell it or rebuild it? My car has a 400 with a single plane Weiand intake - apparently another obsolete model better suited for much higher rpm than I run. What carb does anyone recommend as an alternative? Let me know.
Thanks

650 with vacuum secondaries and a quick change spring kit. Then a dual plane manifold for better lower end response.

Planning on doing that myself. Dual plane intake that is.

Carb rebuild is easy as well. Grab a trick kit and ur good to go. I also like.to use reuseable bowl gaskets.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
I had to look up that number, I didn't even know what it was. Now I see they are the 4011 series carbs. They are a different breed. They really never caught on from Holley and kind of got forgotten about. I think Summit sells them now as their house brand street/strip carb. You can try to sell it, I don't know that you will get too many bites without giving it away. That being said, give it a shot rebuilding it before you just go buy another. If that doesn't work and you still have to replace it, the street avengers are popular. You can get a 670 and be in the same range as you are, or you can go more classic with my personal favorite street carb, the 80508 Holley 750 Vac secondary carb. It is based on the 3310 with some upgrades. I also agree on a dual plane. I like the performer EPS intake for more stock engines, and the performer rpm for above that. If you can fit an air gap rpm those are good too. I have a standard rpm intake on my Nova.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
Thanks, guys. I rebuilt it and couldn't get the car started. I readjusted the floats and put the old flat o-rings back on the bowl valves. It fired up and sounded better than ever for a few seconds. Then I had a fire in the carb. I've read many people say it's the timing, but that is perfect. I'm starting to get above my knowledge level on this one.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
The carb was prob flooded maybe even into the combustion chamber(?). That's all I can think of that would start a fire. Are you sure it wasn't just a backfire? If you did nothing to your distributor than your timing s/b good, unless something was off prior to the carb rebuild. (?)
Drain the Carb if you can & take your spark plugs out. Let the gas vapor dissipate into the atmosphere. leave the carb off overnight too just cover the opening with a thick shop towel.

Not to spend your money for you, but I think it's time to lose that carb.
I've been running a Holley 3310 on my 400 since the late 80s, with no problems, on a Weiand 8004 two-plane manifold....it does like gas a lot though...
Otherwise, a manifold for a Q-jet, and a Q-jet carb from Mountain Man carbs, would work out good for that engine.

Get a q-jet and a Edlebrock performer manifold. If you want a Holley dont go any more than a 650.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
Try and get one from the early 70's or late 60's you can find the info on the net for which numbers to look for. Get one with the choke on it since some have it mounted manifold. Another alternative is a Edlebrock carb ,a 650 with electric choke,if you arent that familiar with carbs this might be the best bet. THey usually run pretty well out of the box.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
I'd say Q-jet with a dual plane Edelbrok Performer would do real nice. The Q-Jet with the right needles, jets and aperture in it will do what ever you like. Just keep in mind they're more work to tune right but are a great .

X2 on a Q-jet. I've been thinking about replacing the Holley on my 400 in my Malibu. If I go in that direction, I'll just call Mountain Man carbs, and tell that what I want it for, and they will fix up a Q-jet with an electric choke. They are 750 CFM carbs except for some that are used on big block Buicks and Cadillacs, which are 800 CFM. Good part is, they supply only what the engine demands, have small primary venturis for good street drivability, and huge secondaries for when you put your foot in it.....
The folks on the El Camino Central forum have been buying from that place, with all good results, so they must be doing something right.....

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
I have thought about going back to the Q-jet myself. Mine has trouble starting. I rebuilt the carb and it runs great after starting, but it seems like it just dries out and it takes forever sometimes to get enough fuel back up there to start it. That is usually after I let it sit for a while.

Try replacing the rubber fuel line that runs over the rear end, It may be cracked and suxking air thereby losing prime. Ask me how I know...driveit wrote:I have thought about going back to the Q-jet myself. Mine has trouble starting. Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
An M4ME is a later model with electric choke. You may need a plate for your intake manifold. The Edelbrock 650 is also a good carb choice & is easier to tune and a little better for the gas budget as most Q jets for SBC's are 750 CFM. If you have a 305, I'd go with the Edelbrock, a 350 or 400 motor would be a toss up for me.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
Thanks. I picked up a qjet from the junkyard for $10. I don't know enough about carbs to know if it will work - it was in a pile of carbs in a covered truck bed. The code says it's off of a '74 Cadillac. My engine's a 400.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
If it's a '74 Caddy carb, it should still work. It may be an 800 CFM, but your engine will just use what it demands...
What type of choke does it have ?

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
It's been awhile. I got a qjet from Ted at Mountain Man. It's beautiful, but still sitting in the box. It's been a long, cold winter. My neighbor gave me an aluminum GM intake #14057053. He and his brother liked to run these at the track when they had to stay mostly stock with their cars. He talked about sealing off the hot air ports before putting it on. Does anyone know about these manifolds or the modifications he is talking about?
Thanks

Closing off the hot air ports is done with the intake gaskets. The factory manifolds, and OEM compliant aftermarket intakes have what is called an exhaust crossover port that is supposed to heat the air fuel mixture for better fuel atomization during cold starts. Racers don't want to heat the intake air charge, so they put in gaskets that have a metal plate where that port is to prevent exhaust gas from flowing through the intake.
The intake # you gave is just an aluminum version of the standard four barrel cast iron intake and used in the 80's until fuel injection replaced it. A quick search about it tells me that it isn't all that special unless you just want to shave weight off the engine. If you mod the engine very much beyond a good torque cam, it may limit the performance of the engine. It will probably give you the best street driving manners on a mild engine.

Re: Holley 650 #R84014-3
Thanks. That's what I saw, too. It'll probably work well for my car; I can always get a Performer if I want. This one was free.
