Cam ? Empty Cam ?

Post by driveit Wed May 29, 2013 7:45 am

I bought a new Crane cam years ago. It is in another engine with a cracked block. Just wondering if there was any way to find out the specs on the cam is. I can't remember for sure what it was.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and God bless,
Chris

degree wheel and a dial indicator will spec it out if there is no part number.

Are you planning on re-using it ? You might get away with new lifters & doing a normal cam break-in. Using the old lifters in a different block doesn't always work good, since lifter bores are not always in identical positions between different blocks, and may be off enough that the mating isn't the same.

OK, so your suggesting that I go with new lifters rather than the ones in the other block? The other engine probably only has a couple thousand miles on it if that. Not sure if that would make a difference.

Once the cam is broke in, (like 2000 RPM for 30 minutes), the lifters are mated to the lobes enough to run the engine normally. I suggest that a set of new lifters is reasonable insurance for moving the cam to a different block.
There may be other opinions on this of course...

Well, sounds good to me. I think that when if I get the engine from my uncle he has a new set. So that should work.
