Hello from Pittsburgh! 1974 Chevelle Empty Hello from Pittsburgh! 1974 Chevelle

Post by 74barnfind Thu Apr 25, 2013 11:12 pm

Been lurking here for a while, finally got on my computer to post some pics and say hi! (I know everyone loves pictures!)

Anyways, I'm Sean, and I'm 21 years old, and have been messing with things with motors since i could walk! I'm usually helping my dad out with his 71 Camaro, but when this one came along, I couldn't pass it up. It's a 1974 Chevelle Malibu Classic... 4 door. Rolling Eyes Owned by the same man from new till 2012, when it was bought by a buddy of mine. He got bored with it, and now I have it. It had 39,8xx miles when I got it, it now has about 44,000 on it. Anyways, in the couple months I've had it, I've done a couple improvements.

Here's a couple recent into ownership. Hubcaps, white walls.. poor sight.

Got 2 tires and flipped the whitewalls.. much better but too bland. Notice the caprice hubcaps it's had for i don't know how many years! And then... it needed a change. Sooo... Off of a mutual friend I rescued a set of original GM 15x7 Rally wheels, and out of the tire pile at work, the shop down the road (that works on real cars) dropped off a set of tires which work/look the part of what I'm building.

HR70-15's, Bonneville Steel Radials! Just the name alone!

Then, my most recent project was the rear bumper tuck. (front was already done by my buddy beforehand, along with the painted grill) I also removed a couple huge sections of metal... HEAVY!!!

And here's one with dad's car! 540ci Very Happy
Hope to be around a bit more often, hope you guys like it!

PS- Put a 4bbl on the stock 350, added fuzzy dice and a pioneer 8-track player! (There's Boston sticking out of it right now) Clapp

Also, I don't know why, but it has a factory posi with 3:08 Gears! (8.5" 10 bolt) I'll put my 3:73's in whenever I get around to it haha

Nice car. Nothing wrong with four doors. A customer of mine has a 56 Buick 4 door, and when my boss commented on that, his response was, "Four doors, more whores."....So you can just drive more of the ladies around if they need a ride. How many ladies can your buddies in their Hondas carry?
Nice ride. Enjoy it.

Yeah, I like old school. But I wouldn't go as far as installing a 8 track player. Nice job.

Thanks guys! And the only reason I put the 8 track in was that it was AM only.. can't live with that! Plus I have a box or 2 of tapes for it! I just need to find a good vintage equalizer!!

Your engine probably has the "nylon coated" teeth on the cam gear. Samething happened to me about 6 months after I got my 74. That was about 20 years ago, been thru about 5 engines since then. All were used engines so not much to be expected having a heavy foot. Welcome!

Welcome to a great place ! Very Happy
I have a '74 Malibu also, a coupe, which I've had since 1990.
And early on, the teeth on the cam sprocket gave up, like what you likely have. Plastic teeth coatings likely get brittle with age and engine heat.
Great looking Malibu you have there ! Have fun with it Very Happy

Hi,

Welcome! Looks like you have a nice clean car.
Unless you had the engine at high rpms when the timing chain slipped you wouldn't bend the valves, so you should be ok with a new timing chain.
The timing chain setups in these cars used crappy nylon teeth on the cam sprocket, so I have changed lots of these over the years.
Just be sure to use a good double roller chain with steel timing gears and you should be good to go.

Thanks Graham.

I ended up putting in my spare 350 for the time being. Got headers, duals, 2100 converter and a new summit 600cfm carb (not too bad for the price). I'll get pics soon enough but its just a temporary swap
