Saw you had to do the rearend in your car. Good thing you caught it. I think that is kinda what happened to mine. See that bolt on your carrier? That backed out and POW! Use a new bolt .

the monte always had a one legged dog rearend.but the last burnout contest i did in 2011 tore something up in it. after that every burnout i did was posi. so i desided to take a look and find out what was wrong.

when i took off the cover i found this
Chris ! Img_0410

so i took out the retaining screw and found out it was brokeChris ! Img_0411

the center pin will NOT come out,and it spins inside the egg shaped hole when the axels are rotated.

Chris ! Img_0412

i have no idea whats holding it in there, but im glad it never came out.that could of been drastic.

i wanted to pull the axels out so i could reuse the backing plates with the posi and not break open the brake lines. but after many attemps to get the pin out,it did not budge.so i pulled out the old....
Chris ! Img_0413

and am putting in the 3:42 posi that ive had for years along with the bigger sway bar.

Ant-
(Example for Chevelle:) VIN# 1D37U7Bxxxxxx

The "B" before the X's would indicated Baltimore in case you're curious. S/B the same for your cars as far as where to look for Plant Code.

I've had pretty good luck getting that broken pin out. I did it on an 87 full size blazer, 89 full size jimmy and a 90 suburban. Usually the tip of the bolt breaks off, the part without the threads. If your lucky a nice powerful magnet will work it out. If not, or if a thread or two are still caught, I use a left handed drill bit on an extension and rotate it out slowly. Then use the magnet. Been able to get them out on three occasions.

Maybe add a little heat from a map torch w/ the magnet method. Sounds like it's caught on something. I tried to find a good diagram last night on the net & nothing good. I'll look in my service manual too see if it's there.

Here- hope it helps. Looks like there is a retaining washer behind it- maybe it's bent or something?

Since the hole in the carrier is egg shaped, I'd agree that the pin is bent. So basically the pin is shot as well as the carrier. So I'd try to salvage the axles. I say torch the pin out. I'd cut a circle around the pin maybe 2 inch in diameter. Then hit the other end of the pin with the air chisel. Should pop out and then pull the C clips.

Screw them if they don't like it. Laughing

I can't wait to open the barn doors & run my engine for a half hour with no mufflers. The other day one my neighbors flew around the corner & almost took me out. They live right behind me & my little shop is right about 100 ft from their dining room. Twisted Evil

Just so you know a new steel replacement diff cover is super cheap. I bought a doman brand cover from summit racing for less than $20.00. I then spent $10.00 to have it powder coated. It looks really nice. GoFast

I love the finned aluminum look, but I'm a cheap A$$ with a family so the steel will have to do for me. Finned with the 454 logo will look bitchin'. Twisted Evil

Here's my "vintage" cover I've been saving since the mid 80's. Won it in a drag race. Actually bought it with drag race money. Bought it in either Baldwin motion or S/K speed on Long Island, New York. Still NIB but the box is beat up. Tough to find these nowadays.
