converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
yep thats what im trying to do. about 1 1/2 years ago i bought a 76 corvette tilt/tele column for 40.00
while looking for limeys spring and bolts he needs for his SE column, i found a half torn apart monte column.so i took the parts from the vette column and put them on the monte column.
the only problem is 76 used only one style steering wheel, and i dont like it.
i would use it if it was black, but this one is brown
now i found a kit to transform the 76 column into a 69-75 column, so i can use my (vette) steering wheel.
but last time i found it on fleebay,it was 200.00.
yes i have a black 4-spoke steering wheel, but the backs are not the same and i cant use it. the vette wheel has this other piece behind it for the extra stuff.
so i guess i will just wait and see what i do when i redo it this year.sorry i got carried away, just trying to share.

Wait...this is news to me! You mean you can't use a '76/'77 steering wheel on a '73-'75 column?

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
Chris is the vetter column too short? If it is most Caddie's from the 70's usually have a tele column some Buicks too. Pretty cool to have that feature.
While we are on the subject, any of you guys ever have one of these cars where the column is crooked? My 77 is crooked. If you measure on one side of the wheel from the edge of the dash is about an 1/2 inch different from the other. Ive asked this before on another site and could not get an answer. There is no sign of damage at the firewall and it looks straight its like its in there crooked not ben or forced. Is there adjustment? I took off the two bolts and dropped it and I could not see anything.

My 77' is crooked too! To the left I think. I always thought it was factory.

Do the 2 copper bolts that attach the bracket/column to the firewall line up correctly? 1/2" is a lot to be off. Check the seal at the firewall by the gas pedal- the insulation might be hiding loose or corroded bolts. If that seal moves I can see it happening.

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
77-82 was funky.. had a bulge on the side and a lever you had to press to get key out.

76 had a big horn button that you had to twist the center to get it to telescopic.this is the coumn i have. ugly wheel
http://www.ebay.com/itm/69-76-Corvette-Tilt-Telescopic-Steering-Column-/230901624258?fits=Model%3ACorvette&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item35c2cf2dc2&nma=true&si=smWQM4M9AWZcgJCQhjdppGSNwZE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
69-75 had the 3 spoke wheel with the lever behind the horn button.

if i was to use a caddy column i would have to A-use the caddy wheel, B-buy an aftermarket wheel. the telle lever goes through the edge of the wheel.a friend of mine uses them all the time back in the day on hotrods. never was a fan.

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
That is a cool idea to install tilt/tele column bits.
I just converted one to manual trans style column, eliminating all the automatic shift BS. I wasn't that easy to find GM manual parts to swap over. Changing the column was a detail that no one else will probably notice but that was how I wanted it.
Spring for the wheel to finish the project...
Thanks -
Jerry

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
I bought a '73 tilt column off of Ebay for my '74 Malibu. It didn't fit perfect, and seemed longer or shorter (don't remember!) where it went through the firewall. Anyway it was a big improvement for driving comfort.

i have to rig some wire to it or buy a new one.the corvette column had the wires cut. the monte cruise/blinker lever gets bolted on,the corvette cruise/blinker lever had threads at the end. i dont have the cruise stuff under the hood right now,its all boxed up. one day i'll have it all back together.

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
spent yesterday taking it back apart
and painted everything
put it back together this morning using the 3 spoke wheel and found 2 of the same levers
i tried using the 4 spoke wheel, but found i did not have enuff movement for the lock/unlock between the spokes.
i might put the 4 spoke in the caprice, but i really like the rope 4 spoke thats in it now also.

Re: converting a g3 column to a tilt/tele
found some black levers laying around the other day. i kinda like the offset lever for the blinker because of the telescopic puts the wheel farther than normal.
also bought a cylinder with matching door locks. so since my dash is blacked out,i thought the column should be too.
