any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
Reason I ask is that as I finish my 74 Sprint, I'm finding good interior parts at several of my nearby Pick and Pull sites. One in Sparks NV now as 76 Monte with 6 gauge (red) bezel. I stumbled across a perfect black one 4 months ago while liberating inner windshield clips from a 74 Monte. Perfect for my Sprint. These are the difficult parts to find and we, meaning all of us who are interested, should save this stuff for posterity. I say that as a trucker who's hauled thousand plus tons of scrap "mashers" from Reno to shredders in Salt Lake, Plymouth UT and Vegas. The shame sticks with me!!!
I bought a blue mediocre 6 gauge bezel from ebayer for $150.. prior to the $20 black peace I found here in Sparks. Anyone need a blue piece and by the by, blue painters tape stuck to the clear plastic backing up the colored plastic bezel and a carefully used 2 1/8th hole saw met with success. I used a Dremel for the bigger holes and filled balance of oblong holes, (what were GM stylists thinking?) with PlaDough... until I think of a better solution. No Matter.
"WE" need to save this stuff, door hinges, hood hinges etal can be rebuilt if we've liberated the cores gentlemen...

I have a lot of parts for these "A" bodies, too, as I've tried to rescue the useable stuff whenever I can and get them into the hands of those in need before the cars are crushed, sold as Demo cars, or sit in a field and continue to degrade. PNP's near me will occasionally get one in, but they are few and far between. Fortunately, I have several regular salvage yards in my area that still keep some of them. These cars mostly disappeared years ago from the rigors of our winter road salt. If I had a storage barn, I'd have it filled with parts!

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
I know a lot of derby guys and try to buy or atleast get the chance to strip any of the A bodies they have. I just talked to a guy about 2 months ago that threw away a set of swivel buckets and a full black interior. I told him how much the swivels were worth and he started throwing stuff in his garage.. Lol.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
AS an aside guys/ girls... If there is a legitimate reason for '73s through '77s being {less} desirable, I clearly don't get it. My Sprint with the (Mercedes)-Chevelle grille caught my eye in 1987, in a field in Southern Oregon. No drive-train, hood in the back, but the grille "spoke" to me.
Enter an old timer that bought it as I couldn't find the owner, and 6 months later, in a Penny Saver, (which I never read) forsale add in the neighboring town (also) caught my eye. My old '70 F150 and $800.00 and the 350 Chevy / 350 Turbo automatic running Sprint number 00003 for 1974 was in my garage.
Now nearing the end of the third reincarnation of the old friend. Finally close to properly done. Labor of love/ stupidity. But what's done is done.
Save all the old stuff.
I threw away a 6 gauge bezel 12 years ago as my daughter wanted her storage shed back. it was "in the way."
Recently found a worn to death set of swivel buckets at "Pick N Pull, Sparks from a '77 El Camino. $600.00 and some clean up and paint on the pristine plastic bases, and they'll soon be in my "new" 74 Sprint.
Keep the faith guys.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
I use to collect a lot of parts. I'd keep and sell what I needed to. They are harder to find now though. There is a 76 Camino that I hope is still around, there was some other good parts I wanted to snag.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
I swung by Desert Valley Auto in N. Phoenix while I was down there last week. It's a quick 15 min. drive from my parents and always like to pay them a visit just to see their cars. Anyway, there must have been a dozen '73-'77 El Caminos in their yard. Probably nearly as many Chevelles/Malibus & Montes. Of course, they think their parts are made of gold, so there are few deals to be had.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
One more aside... then I'll shut up.
Watched Desert Valley on TV for a number of episodes. Other than the owner being a edit, I thought they had a ton of rusty cars for being in the desert southwest but then into every life a bit of rain shall fall... Well their "photos" showed a '74 Sprint with a good grille but short of paying for it up front, no one would go look for the car to see if it was even there much less what I wanted!!!
Subsequent bike ride down the backside of the Sierras last April, during which time I spent half the ride above the snowline, I gave up on adding a day to the trip to check on the grille they may or may not have had.
Ended up re-chroming a good one from ebay and now it's complete. The End.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
Anyone need help with a Painless wiring setup for these cars with air et, give me a shout. I paid my dues, and everything works. Painless tech line was a help and I'd use a lot more shrink wrap if I was to try it again, but Painless gives you 2 hot leads to the heater a/c and not much else... Just saying, trial and error.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
When they 1st started that yard I used to go there a lot and they treated me pretty good. But in the last 4 or 5 years, i avoid it unless there is no other option. There is another yard in Maricopa Az called Hidden Valley and they are a little more reasonable. They had 5 Lagunas when I was there about 2 years ago.

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
I did ask about a couple things while at Desert Valley. First was a pair of rear bumper guards on a '75 Malibu. Nice shape, but chrome wasn't show by any means. The guy quoted me $75...EACH! I about choked! Questioned him, but he wasn't backing down. Then, asked about the front swivel bucket seat belts out of a '77 Monte and he quoted me $45/set...which I did think was probably reasonable for a non-Pick'N Pull yard. No rhyme or reason for their pricing. They had the swivel buckets for $500/pr. (needed reupholstered), console (missing storage lid) @ $200. Told me they get $600-$700 per qtr panel (including inner and outer wheel wells)...think he said $500 for a door. I did find it interesting that they would quote a price before seeing what condition the part was in. Or, maybe they figured that since I had seen them out on the cars, that they must be in good shape for me to ask about them.
My only experience with Hidden Valley was that they quoted me $200/pr for Laguna louvers a couple yrs ago. At that point, I figured they were about the same as DVAP with their pricing.

Pick N Pull
Again, for what it is worth. Pick N Pull's website, (bookmarked on my PC) allows me to keep a constant eye open even though I don't have to go in for the $2. I just periodically check their site for 73-77 A bodies and the date it became available.
If it's fresh, I drive 2 blocks from the truck stop after work and check it out.
Like I commented earlier, I have a lot of making up to do for all those mashers I hauled their last miles...

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
Did you really spend 600 for a set of swivels that needed work?
Chris and i are not asking enough i guess for someone to buy them. we have a perfect driver set for 400 and nobody wants them.

No! Sorry! I spent $40.00 for the pair, had them reupholstered and really cleaned up the bases. They look sensational as the upper (upholstered) top halves of each door panel also match now, with a faint, contrasting stitching. All in $600.00. Pictures will follow if and when I figure out how to install the console and floor shiftier I found in a "77 El Camino.

Are you talking about the belt retractors, themselves? What color belts?

Re: any Pick N Pull affectionados out there?
No, the back or the seats bolts to a block along with the seat belt....supposedly about 3 1/2 inches high?? the front bolts directly to the floor, and the back part of the brace to the block then to the floor???

They are also the retractors for the "lap" half of the front belts. I don't know if they are the same for Sprint/Elco vs. Malibu.
