It was in an article about Pontiac V8 engines & the men who conceived them. I subscribe to the "Amos Auto Enthusiast" newsletter. Every once in a while they'll have an article that has a G3 A body car. This Can Am race car is the "Baddest" I've ever laid eyes on & has a Poncho 366 race motor. In the same article there is also a facinating archival photo of a hand-written factory Dyno break-in "score card" for an SD 455 motor from the 70's.
PS- I think the number choice was no accident. LOL

Too bad Pontiac was focused on getting emissions down and had abandonded high-po ANYthing except the poser-am firebirds! (which I happen to like...) That 73 Grand Am COULD have been a great competitor, but they pulled it out before it was publicly seen at the Daytona 500, dammit.

I talked to Jim Wangers about it, and he said that the Grand Am was the best thought out auto they had brought to market up to that point, but by 1973 the timing was off, and the competition with the Grand Prix was considered bad business by the brass. With the gas crunch, and the auto worker strikes, and the insurance hikes it was over. He left Pontiac about the same time, but continued to work with them through an independent company.

Couldn't agree more about the G/A...& score another kill for the regulators.
Those few SD 455 cars that actually came to market in the T/A's were under-rated purposely (don't know if that was Jim's legacy or not) but they pumped out more HP then they claimed in the "official" documents. You can argue the fact that those SD 455 F-body's were tops for GM HP until they stopped making them. Pontiac did keep the faith I think more than the others- at least they seem to have tried harder IMO.

That's Tom Miller's old 73 Stage 1. It ran 13.8's in totally stock form. He sold it probably 2 years ago or so.
I have a midnight blue Stage 1 4 spd - I'll introduce myself and post pictures sometime soon.

Bicknellwelding mentioned his nomination for this car on another thread recently. Just posting here for everyone's consideration for next weeks ROTW car. I agree this Cale Yarborough Nascar deserves recognition even though its a "1980" LOL
If you want to buy it it's on e-bay (or was recently) for only $299,000.00
