"Permanent" water spots?

Just got my (grandpa's) old Plymouth home today. I tested out an area for cleaning. I used some Turtle Wax ICE quick detailer 3 times and it cleaned it perfect enough for wax, so I don't have a sponge bath her. Anywho, it looks like there are water spots on the paint(the one fender I did anyway) but they will not come off, with the ICE spray or wax. Any idea how this happens or what they are? Or how to get rid of them? It's all fairly new paint...so I may clay bar it, if it will take the spots off. Not worried about it rubbing down the paint.

Start with some polishing compound (white stuff)

Hard water - calcium. Sucks @$$.

Clay bar is what I would try. Polishing compound can be quite abrasive.

I got this on the Plymouth P-15/Dodge D-24 forum:

You might try some light rubbing counpound, or (take a deep breath and trust me here) go to the grocery store and buy some Bon Ami cleansing powder, wet the area with a solution of one pint of water and 3 or 4 frops of dish washing liquid. Use a windex or similar spray bottle. Now dust on some Bon Ami and with a wet soft cloth or a wet dishwashing sponge go over the area like you would with rubbing compound. Rinse it off let it dry and see if it dealt with your issue.

It also works great at getting years worth of road crud off the widshield.

If you can't find BonAMi look for Barkeepers Friend. DO NOT use any other type of cleanser as they all contain silicate based abrasives and will scratch the paint.

BA and BKF have very mild abrasives.

I am going to try the clay bar first(the Mothers system). My grandpa never cared about detaling like I do(never waxed etc), but I would imagine he washed it a couple times. I THINK, not 100%, that where he lived had hard water....

I have never used the clay bar, so don't know how abrasive it is. What I would try is tooth paste, not the colored kind but the white stuff. I would be very afraid, personally, to try Bon Ami or Bartender's Friend. JB

I parked next to the grass at school one day and when I came out, the entire back half of the car had waterspots. I couldn't get them off. I had a guy at work clay bar my entire car for $60.00. Not only did it take off the spots, but the whole car was like glass.

That's what I am shooting for. The car is dark blue (Chevron Blue, they called it) and it would like sharp as hell with a glass like finish.

I picked up a Mother's Clay Bar kit. Did NOT work on the water spots. BUT, they are only on the driver's side front fender. My grandpa had had that fender repainted a few years ago, and they probably f&cked something up. I got both fenders and the hood clayed and waxed...looks great!

Claybar works awesome, we did it on my older bros 06 chrysler 300 and it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor!!
