thermostat
being a non-ECU car do i need to have a Thermostat in my intake manifold if i have no Heater or ac? Cooling fan IS elecric and on a manual switch NOT electronically controlled.

hmm im not sure would help in warming the motor on chilly mornings and in return save on wear and tear on it too so in my opinion yes but its just my opinion

I've ran without them before. Never seen any ill effects during the Summer & since you don't have a heater the stat ain't gonna make a difference in the Winter either. Then again, some people do have the fear of running a motor too cold, at least that's the word of mouth. For less than $15, you might as well run one. Get a Hypertech 160 or 185 if you want to run cooler than stock. I'm gonna be using the 185 just so I can still retain heat in the winter. Also hooking up your fans to the temp gauge would be a wise idea. Too much risk of not paying attention to the temperature on a drive or leaving it on too long & burning up the motor. No need to ask me how I know this.

thanks, its got one in it now a brand new 160 but i just remembered hearing someone ask if i was going to run without one. ill just leave it then.

You have to slow down the flow a little .If you dont want to run one cut out the guts of it and just run the plate.

get a 180 thermostat. it helps to get the car up to temp faster and maintains a good minimum operating temp to help the moisture evaporate out of the oil.

Anyone running a 160* thermostat on their small block? I'm thinking that since the car will be driven in warmer months only that this will help the engine maintain a cooler temp for cruising around in the heat of summer.
I'll be keeping the stock set up with respect to radiator & drive belt driven fan only (no electric fans). I've read that this mod will feel noticeable in terms of power output & I'm thinking that since my heads are race style heads that it will keep them cooler & running more efficiently also.

Here is my 2 cents on this. I had a 396 with a be cool cross flow radiator in it. Was running a 160 super stat. It would run really hot unless I was going down the freeway. It ran about 200-210 and if in stop and go traffic it would clime higher. I tried everything and it was all new parts and coolant flow was really great. That was the problem, it was flowing so fast that it did not get time to cool down. I installed a 190. Yes a 190 stat and I can watch my digital gauge cycle open and close from 188-195 like clock work. I have dual 12" electric fans on it. I can idol all day long at car shows, parades and the fans even cycle on and off. After swapping out Stats 3 times and adding some Bee cool additive and every thing I could think off. I talked to guy at a show and he just laughed and said by a 190 stat and try it what are you out. That was 6 years ago and every thing is fine.

Yes I have a small block in that car now and the same thing. Sold the 396 out of it

I actually run a 190 in mine too. That never goes over 190-195

I run a 160 in my 350. Never had a problem. On real hot days the temp gauge can climb up to 180 but never had it go over. I do have an oversize rad also. I think a 180 would be better all around. Unless your going to beat on it alot, then go 160. Also, get a high flow stat. They dont look like a stock stat but they flow more water because of the larger poppet. Stant now also makes a reverse poppet stat that pops OPEN if it goes bad.
Always run a stat otherwise the coolant doesnt slow down enought to grab heat from the engine and let it go in the rad. You can actually overheat without a stat.

I was hoping that it would not run any hotter than 180 as a bit cooler is actually the optimal temp for the cylinder heads on my build.

The temp required to keep any sludge build up from oil not getting up to high enough temp for the detergent to work, would have to be up around 180 to 190. Having a big cored radiator solves most cooling problems it seems.
