HDHugger wrote:Okay okay! The majority wins! Ya got me convinced! Seriously though, I jsut found an oil leak and it's coming from the timing chain cover, so I'm thinking the chain will be getting installed fairly quickly.
And Limey, thanks for the lead on the seats. We already have an upholsterer lined up, just have to order the covers. And on another note, I put the louvers up to my rear window and the final answer is HELL NO! With the angle of the back end, the louvers don't look good at all on my car! So, had you posted a pic of that dash? I can't remember. If you did, please lead me to it. If you didn't please post it if you can. We'll be back in the area in a few weeks.
and if you don't use that black one bring it back he was not supposed to get rid of that one was gonna make a bar stool with it for the garage ........if you gonna use it though no problem I guess I will work it out with him, I am glad you got them though he had forgotten about you coming to get them and was gonna take them to Jefferson Swap Meet

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
I WOULD TRACK THAT OIL LEAK DOWN BEFORE ANYTHING THOUGH BEFORE ANY RE ASSEMBLY OR DIS ASSEMBLY FOR THAT MATTER !!
Wipe it down real good the front where you think its coming from wait to start again then you narrowed it down where its coming from.........for from sitting all winter you just dont know where it was seeping from !!

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
I crawled under it, tracked the leak to the timing cover chain, but we have to put it on the ramps to get a better look. Oil pan looks funny to me, it's square like the bottom of a 9" square cake pan! And we haven't found the drain plug.
We weren't going to take the black seat, but the guy kept saying "Take it! Use it for parts or throw it out!" Seemed like he wanted it gone, so we took it. We may need the plastic back panel because the white one is pretty gouged, but we may also fill in the gouges and spray the white ones with a black krinkle coat. We used that paint on some of the trim pieces on my husband's Nighttrain and it looks sharp. We'll see what works. Right now I feel like I have a lot of irons in the fire, and I'm supposed to be doing my schoolwork! But I gotta order seat covers first....

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
I don't care about the back part keep the black one if its better shape i can spray paint it back in black ..............yes I know AC/DC LOL anyways yea you should be able to find the plug would hate to have to drop the whole pan to drain oil LOL that would suck real bad............... and the black seat he just forgot I was supposed to get it is all
And the Oil Pan do you have a remote oil filter some where in engine bay ?? sometimes they do that but still should have a oil drain plug HMMMMMMMMM

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
Limey, there are 2 oil filters on the drivers side behind the headlight.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
that explains the no drain plug sounded like a remote oil filler location, but there has to be a drain somewhere in line ?? how would get the old oil out ?? unless it has a quick disconnect at the oil filters to let it drain out ??

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
Good thought, and seems easier than crawling under the engine to pull the plug. Thanks.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
That doesn't really make sense because vehicles equipped with remote oil filters connect to the original oil filter location via adapter. Oil still has to have a way out of the pan.
Somewhat off topic - For anyone looking for a cheap remote oil filter, look in the salvage yard for a 4.3 liter Chevy S10 or GMC S15 from the late eighties on up.

Pretty much.Limey wrote:but what is the second filter for added insurance
It's good for dusty situations. Also adds an extra quart of oil for a cooler running engine, extends oil longevity due to more filtration, etc.
Here's how it should look:

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
I've seen dual remote filters way back in the late eighties/early nineties. It was an aftermarket item, but still had to drain oil from the pan.
It had an adapter that hooked up to the factory location.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
There's a drain plug on the pan. It's probably hidden by the crossmember or just being overlooked. 99% of the time it's at the bottom rear corner of the pan. The only reason I can think of that it doesn't have a drain is if someone home-fabbed a pan or welded the drain closed & ground it smooth, but both of those would be unnecessary.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
Here's what it looked like: (1) There was fresh leaking around the timing chain cover, then (2) a metal piece under the engine that has a drip hole in it where more fresh oil was leaking (not enough oil leaking to be a blown out drain plug), then (3) the "cake pan" which looks like it had some oil that was blown back onto it along the drivers side (from #2).
Rago, the diagram is exactly what the oil filter setup looks like.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
Sounds like the torque converter dust cover is the piece with the drip hole. The engine oil pan is just forward of there and there you will find the drain plug for the engine.
Sounds like you might have a rear main seal leak. If the oil has a red color or smells different than the oil leak from the timing cover, the transmission seal is leaking. Could be that both are leaking.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
my opinion for what its worth replace oil pan gasket with felpro piece about $40 and both front and rear seals on tranny(for piece of mind) The fel pro one i used on an engine and loved it. no gasket sealer no worry of leaks at the corners. comes with new bolts and 4 screw in pins on the 4 corners to hold the pan on and aligned till all side bolts in then unscrew and put in corner bolts

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
I'm sorry I don't have much to add to the conversation, but my stock timing chain broke on the 350 in my 73 Monte 20 years ago, causing me to have to do a complete rebuild. That sucked.
I realize now that there are good quality dual roller chains available, and people swear by them, so I guess they are OK. I don't know what I'd use in my next build, but the 454 in my white 73 Monte has a Pete Jackson gear drive and I don't think it's all that noisy. Yep, you can hear it alright, but it's not distracting. I for one think that a gear drive is basically unbreakable, so that gives me peace of mind.

Re: Gear drive vs Timing Chain
Ive never seen a stock timing chain broke but have seen lots of the gears worn out and those stupid nylon timing gears stripped.

Nylon? Why would anybody use a nylon gear? On purpose??? Doesn't sound too durable to me. Hmmmm.....
