TH350 to TH400
What does this swap entail?
It's my 74 El Camino, and the donar trans is coming out of an 83 Chevy van (with really low miles). My trans has been beat and it's just tired, so I'd want to swap in this TH400. What does this operation entail and have any of you guys done this before?

Electric switch at the gas pedal, move the crossmember back, and the yoke for the driveshaft. That's all I can think of right now.

So it's a weekend job? If I move the crossmember back, will that require welding?

Re: TH350 to TH400
It isn't that much of a difference. Maybe drilling a couple of new holes in the frame rail. You might not even have to do that since some of these cars came with TH400's anyway.

Here is a description of a swap in a 70 chevelle. The process is almost identical to this generation

Re: TH350 to TH400
The switch at the gas pedel isnt required. all it does is downshift when needed and change the shift points when WOT.
Since the tranny is out of a van, make sure its not a long tail, if it is then you might want to look for another. the driveshaft will only be a few feet long and might stress the joints and the frame will have to be drilled for it.
Using a short tail should go right in using a 1" shorter drive shaft with th400 yoke.
Youll need to use the th400 dipstick as well.

Hey Black while we're on the subject, what's my 73 set up for? I know that sounds bad, but I still haven't had time to mess with it much.

Re: TH350 to TH400
Its not, the driveshaft is for a th350.... but other than that you can put anything in it.

Re: TH350 to TH400
Yeah, my main concern was the driveshaft. I thought you had said something about it having a TH400 at one point, didn't know what all is hooked up to the TH350 in it now.

Re: TH350 to TH400
The th400 driveshaft that was in it was from the SS

even if it is a long tailshaft trans, it still mounts up the same as a short shaft TH400- just slide the crossmember back and shorten the driveshaft as needed and put on the TH400 yoke. the length of the driveshaft won't affect the operation- there are many cars out there with much shorter driveshafts that what will be required for even a long shaft TH400. as long as the angles are good, then it won't be a problem.
