Welcome to the site! Post some pics of the Cutlass. The "S" DOES NOT stand for Supreme! Cutlass Supremes were the luxury model. The S just simply means S. Some will say it stands for sport, which makes sense, but I haven't ever seen hard proof. In earlier days the line-up was this:
1. 442
2. Cutlass Supreme
3. Cutlass S
4. Cutlass F85
Third Generation A-bodies came about in 73, but for the Cutlass, it was actually the 4th generation! The line-up changed to this:
1. Cutlass Salon
2. Cutlass Supreme
3. Cutlass S (442 option available on this model)
4. Cutlass (base)
In 1976, the base model was dropped & Cutlass S became the base model. Also this is the year that the front end was revised, & was the last year for the 455. Cutlass Supreme Brougham was introduced this year as the new top luxury model. Also a new 5 speed manual became available with the 260. 1977 had some changes, but the most notable was the addition of the 403 small block that replaced last year's 455 big block.
I'm sure I left out a bunch of info, but this should give you something to read about. I'm sorry I don't really understand what you are saying on the second half of your post.

The Cutlass S (all it means is S) is the base model for that year, just like they dropped chevelle malibu and went to the malibu classic line up

You're a little slow Limey. Must be getting old, lol. On the other hand, I didn't know Malibu Classic was the only option available in 77 or did they just drop the Chevelle name? I have seen single headlight 77s, so this is pretty intriguing.
