I decided to try and overhaul my first steering box. It started leaking from both seals. I started out with the seals and one thing led to another and ended up overhauling the whole thing. I figured if I screw it up or get in over my head I could always slap it back together and turn it in for a core. Got it installed today and after bleeding the system it turned out great. no leaks, no noise. The biggest pia of the whole thing was the 24 balls inside. Those of you wanting to try I suggest taking it apart on a cookie sheet or something to contain the balls when it comes apart. Also you will want to get a GM service manual. The box is from a 85 Monte SS. 12.7 ratio high effort. I borrowed a 85 buick service manual. Very detailed instructions inside as well as the proper way to adjust. My 73 service manual does not cover any of it. You also need a needle type inch pound wrench to measure the drag. Total cost was $40. I didn't think to take any pics while it was apart. There are also several useful you-tube vids on this.
$20 for the kit
$10 for a spanner wrench.
$10 paint & cleaners.

Nice job. That needle inch pound torque wrench is also needed when setting pinion load on the rear diff. Good to have.

Great to hear you did it yourself. Not many folks would wade into a steering gear like you did !
I just bought an exchange rebuilt gear box for the wife's Jeep from hell, to replace the old one.....

Thanks Guys...For an everyday driver such as the jeep, probably better off to get a reman one due to the down time. I had all winter to play with this one. Although some of this reman stuff is hit or miss nowadays..
I was also worried about getting something out of sync and having the steering wheel off center. It turns out everything is keyed and clocked so that it only goes together one way. Can't really screw that part of it up..

Nice job, looks brand new! Curious if you remember what size the nut was to remove the pitman arm?
Thanks.
Thanks.
